2009 Nissan Maxima With Picts.

Nissan Sport Mag. has just released the first
look into the 2009 Nissan Maxima

The seventh generation of the much-loved Maxima sport sedan series debuted in March at the 2008 New York International Auto Show. Looking quite different from the sixth-gen version, the new Max is slightly shorter in both wheelbase and overall length. Adding a wider stance both front and rear leaves little doubt—Nissan intends to return this Maxima to its 4DSC (four door sports car) roots! Radical new sheetmetal accentuates the aggressive appearance of this new car. While design elements appear to have eliminated every straight panel on the surface, there are incredible details that draw the eye. Take the headlights, love ’em or hate ’em, you’ll be hard pressed to find anything on the road that features the L-shaped multi-angled acrylic “eyes” on this vehicle. Surrounded by turn signals and running lights, the standard halogen (HID optional) headlights will offer the type of dynamic styling that will set it apart from any other premium offerings of other carmakers.
Among the targets that Nissan’s design team aimed for was to build “the best performing, best handling front-wheel drive car in the world.” Interesting, since similar objectives were put forth when the latest Altima sedan was introduced in ’07. Both models utilize the Nissan Global D platform and it makes sense that the company would raise the bar for its flagship performance sedan. To those ends, chassis rigidity was upgraded by employing an X-type cowl structure for the independent front suspension to mount to. Each side of the front strut/coil spring is mounted to this subframe using aluminum suspension components. The fully independent rear is a multi-link double wishbone design with shocks and springs separated to minimize friction—a design Nissan used with great effect in the 350Z. Front and rear sway bars will be standard on the Maxima and it’ll be interesting to see how high the handling thresholds will be once we test one!
No specs were available at press time on the four-wheel power ABS disc brake system, but Maxima engineers utilized larger vented front and rear rotors. It’s a safe bet that the binders will be significantly upgraded from the previous generation Maxima, with promises of better brake pedal rigidity and smoothness as well. New Twin Orifice Power Steering (TOPS) rack-and-pinion steering should offer easy effort in parking maneuvers and precision at high speeds. Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) and traction control are both standard among a long list of safety features on the car.
Heart of the 4DSC

Powering this newest iteration of the Maxima will be yet-another version of the award-winning VQ35. The 3.5-liter, DOHC 24-valve V6 has been enhanced and refined for this role—although which version of the engine (DE, “rev-up”, HR or another yet to be named) has not yet been released. Initial estimates of power levels rate the new engine at 290 horsepower and 261 lb-ft of torque. This represents a 35 horsepower/9 lb-ft torque increase over the VQ35DE in the ’08 Maxima. Nissan claims improvements in the air intake, combined with combustion and exhaust (E-VTC on the exhaust side) technology have made this possible. It will be interesting to see if these improvements can maintain, or even improve on the EPA mileage figures (19 city/25 hwy) of the outgoing model. Platinum spark plugs with 100K major service intervals will ensure that Maxima owners can continue to count durability as an asset. Besides a new six-point engine mount, the latest Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) will help keep that power flowing smoothly. If fuel economy is important to you, Nissan previously announced this Maxima would offer a clean diesel option for the 2010 model year.

Nissan crafted an interior they labeled “Super Cockpit” to operate this starship from. Expect to see premium materials, including high-quality cloth and leather seats with metallic and Eucalyptus wood-tone trim gracing the interior. Of course, there will be options galore, from heated and cooled seats and a multi-port moonroof to a Music Box with 9.3 GB hard drive, XM entertainment and I-Pod or Bluetooth compatibilities. Expect to see it all matched against eight exterior paint options: Super Black, Sterling Blue, Tuscan Sun, Winter Frost, Radiant Silver, Mystic Jade, Precision Gray and Dark Slate. No matter the color, prospective Maxima owners will have two option levels to choose from: 3.5 S or 3.5 SV. Deliveries are expected to commence by early summer, as quickly as the Smyrna and Decherd, Tennessee factories can produce them. Nissan Sport will be waiting eagerly to find out if this version of the Maxima does indeed offer new levels of refinement and performance for the nameplate.
