09 Maxima's ad claim...
I'm not sure how much you guys have read about the new Max, but I've seen it printed in more than 1 place now where "3 out of every 4 Maximas EVER sold are still on the road today." If this is true, that's really impressive!
To test this claim:
My first Maxima was totaled, 2nd sold with 175K to a teen, 3rd was sold with 165K, and I'm currently driving the 4th....lT MUST BE TRUE!!!

I know for a fact that six of my seven are still on the road... don't know anything about the '87. Hell, I sold it 14 years ago it only had 60k miles despite being 8 years old! Who knows... could be still out there, too!

I see a lot of 4th and 5th Gens on the road, the 5th Gens are still relatively new but the 4th gens I would say, half are in good condition with the other half ranging from looking like hell, to high mileage cars that need some body work.

Ya maximas do run good, theres alot of 3rd gens still n the road today.
Personally i think the 3.0 was a better and stronger morotr then the 3.5
I had 4 4thgens and 1 5th gen, none of my 4th gens burned any oil but my 5th gen did.
I wonder if the numbers count cars that are totaled. Cause back hen i used to go to auto auctions id see alot of smashed maximas.....

IMO, 75% because you've got to really be a FANATIC and/or a stubborn enthusiast to own a Maxima. The remaining 25% are people who like the numbers they see, but don't expect the dedication needed to own a Maxima.

My same vintage '96 GMC Sonoma that I still own only has 82k very light duty, garage kept miles on it and feels like it is on borrowed time. Already has a total rebuild of front suspension, third A/C compressor, third alternator, second water pump, new set of power mirrors (housings cracked from vibrations, cracked seat frame, all vacuum hoses replaced (severe cracking), vacuum reservoir replaced, HVAC control panel replaced, two O2 sensors replaced, main bearing seals leaking. I can't imagine what it would be like if it was actually used as a work truck or had mileage like the Max's did. You might be able to keep them on the road for a while, but its like the proverbial axe that someone has used for 50 years, but they replaced the head 4 times and the handle 3 times.

My '95 & '96 Max's both had ~170k miles on them when I sold them, and still drove like new. The combined non-maintenance repairs for the two of them was one starter. The '96 also had new struts/shocks at 120k and the '95 at 130k, but that is normal and reasonable maintenance.

My experience completely disagrees with the 4/5G exhaust issues (never a single problem or need to replace any exhaust component) and the 5th gen paint/trim issues (without question the 5.0/5.5g Max's were the best screwed together and finished Maximas I ever had - especially the 5.5).
6.5's look pretty good...
...then again, Consumer Reports is more appropriate when shopping for soul-less appliances like refrigerators, dishwashers or Camry's.

The reliability chart, in my opinion, reflects the expected longivity/life of certain systems in cars. I agree CR isn't much for reviews. It's basically "did the product do it's job, and how well/poorly?"
Compared to other family cars, The Accord fairs darn well. They sell a lot, and plenty of them on the road still. Accord pretty much gets perfect scores across the board. And of course don't forget the Camry, u see a ton of them around, even the first couple Gens are still on the road.

87 SE 5sp - taken to junk yard due to bad input shaft bearing, ran really good just to much rust (mn car) and lack of money to fix. Had like 190000 irrc
89 SE 5sp - really rusty (mn car once again) currently being used for parts, so kinda still on the road (well at least some parts) 240000 irrc
85 SE 5sp - current daily driver with 184000 running like a dream (will need clutch and input shaft bearing kinda soon) and very little rust (want to get fixed really soon)

i have a 5th gen (sorta, read my sc) anyway i once drove a 04 6th gen and i could not believe the torque that car had. in a couple of years if the gas prices a fall a lil( probably wont) i will deff get e manual 6th gen or g coupe. I wouldn't diss camry's and accord's because tho they are boring cars owners of those two cars really love there cars but wish they baught a maxima when they hear our engines scream!lol

First one was wrecked, and now my oil pump went on my 99, pretty much requiring a new engine, which i'm in the process of right now. It WILL be back on the road, but i think this car should fall into the 1 of 4 that aren't on the road anymore because it requires an engine swap.

that does not mean they are gone from the market, I think the problem with the northeast is most are concerned with driving new cars, maybe it's just me but I would rather drive my Maxima then trade it in for a new Altima, even most of the new car dealers don't have cars with more then 40k in the pre-owned lots

A few weeks ago, i went on a college-tour road trip. My father was driving, and I didn't have my max, so i decided to count all the maximas i saw to sort of see how accurate nissans claim really was, in fived days i saw 93 maximas total ranging from 3rd gens all the way to 6th gens...primarily 5th gens....there are five on my street alone...three sixth gens, my fifth, and my friends fourth...also four at my high school, two fourths and two fifths

Well let's not forget the ones that insurance co sells to 3rd world countries like Mexico. When I was in Bolivia, I saw a lot of 1980s era sentras and maximas, all 4 and 5sp manuals. Pretty dope!

4 out of 5 fords ever made are still on the road. The other 20% managed to make it home just fine
