Another Victim fallen to Don's VB Mod

After 3.5 hrs and a cracked sideskirt(don't ask), Don's vb mod IS God's gift to maxima automagics everywhere. If I can get a run or two in this Sunday, I'll post up #s.

You're the man Don!

I have never gotten a complete answer. Does Don do a VB Mod for the 3rd gen VE powered SE models?

Please Don, answer?

Dirky, I do believe the VE and VQ autos are the same. I think the VG autos are different. So I think there is a very good chance that it will work.

The install is very easy. I did mine in about 4 hours the first time, took about 2 the second time(I too swaped for stock as I am also selling mine) Just get the instructions off don's site and you are good to go. Follow them step by step. Do not be afraid to get messy and wear your old clothes cuz ATF doesnt come out to my knowledge. You just drop the tranny pan, clean it drop the VB with 13 bolts, put the new one in - keep an eye on the retaining clip and the spring, put the 13 bolts back in and put the pan back on. After that just add the ATF.

P.S. By far the best mod I did to my car.

Re: call me stupid, but...

VB = valvebody ... more info in the 4th gen FAQs in the 4th gen forum.

And the VB mod is only for automagics.

VQ = your engine
VE = 92-94 SE engine
VG = my engine

It is more rough thatn stock. You sometimes feel yourself actually being moved as it shifts. But, keep in mind that I had CAI, Y, Cat, and exhaust and VB and it chirped 2nd under WOT. I didnt find it harsh enough to be anoying, maybe Ange can give her impressions too, but I enjoyed it very much. If you are into more of a sleeper that you really dont push to the limits it might not be a mod for you.

Chirping isn't easy for a NA motor under WOT. I have all the usual intake/exhaust mods and my VB was installed in a fresh rebuild tranny and no chirping for me, even at WOT. But I do love the positive engagement of gears. If we were able to get back the 20-30hp we lose to our 5spd brothers with the same mods we would be whopping them at ever light

It didnt chirp them on every shift, but about 2 out of 5 or so chirped. Depends on your tires and the street surface. But still, 2 out of 5 is good Makes you look like a Badasss infront of the honey-babies and really imberrases the hon-duh guys when they lose to your automagic

heh. does anyone have dyno charts for the VB? I drove it...it shifts hard, but doesn't feel like it pulls any harder.

it shouldnt pull harder, it doesnt add HP, just shortens the gaps in shifting, almost as if you were "power shifting" a 5-spd. it will increase 1/4 mile time, but not HP.

Cant' afford dyno
Hopefully the pit isn't too crowded on Sunday so I can post up some #s. Not exactly the most accurate way to testing it out but it's certainly the most practical way for me right now.

Posted by bags533: how hard was the install?
It's definitely a process, but Mobiltek's/Don's write-up is pretty much right on the money. Making sure every bolt/ screw goes precisely on the right hole is critical. There's no margin for error so you need to take your time to follow's don's directions every step of the way. I was lucky enough to have Jeff and Jim who had prior experience in swapping out vbs to lend their time and expertise.

One of the best investment made on the max, right up there next to the intake and y-pipe

That was part of the entire repair job my dear.
With the accident, at least half of the car had to be repainted, labor/ paint cost to redo the entire car was a few hundred bucks more. I had to replace the dented front bumper and side underbody (damaged from jumping the curb)... hence the Sarona bodykit, at cost. Nissan factory bodyparts aren't cheap either.

VB mod is a mod for your tranny to make it shift faster but the only draw back is that it builds up more heat. You are suppose to buy a tranny cooler (at least a Haydens 403x). It doesnt giv eyou anymore HP or throw you in your seat. This is NOT a HP mod.

This is probably the best mod for ANY auto. The VB eliminates the weak points in autos; the inbetween shifting. Usually there lag there and eats up your clutches (Yes autos have clutches, only between the gears) and this is where the VB shines.

BTW-I always get chirps from 1-2 (even w/ my chrome rims) WHen i put my steel rims on, they chirp every damn time. If yours doesnt chirp then i dont know whats wrong.

Actually it decreases the 1/4 mile time

Mechanic - That question was already answered in this thread, go back a few pages.

She swaped with a guy turning his car back to stock, she received the VB and swaped them and sent the guy her stock one.

I had mine overnighted to don, then the day he was suppose to mod it and overnight it back was 9-11-01 and we all know what happened. Needless to say it took a while longer to get it back, but if you overnight it to him and make sure he knows its comming like that he can have it back to you in under a week.
