I went to Home Depot and bought a 12"X18" sheet of thin alum. I made a cardboard template of the heat shield and then transposed it onto the alum and cut it out. Very simple job. It took about 20 minutes to make. Make sure you cover the edges of the metal though to keep from cutting yourself and the wires. Remember that the engine does move around a bit. I drove around in rush hour traffic for 30 minutes then popped the hood. The heat shield was warm, but the filter was still cool. I don't quiet understand how it works, but it does.

Yes, pictures would be great. If I make one I think I'll make one that looks like the APEXi one. How thick is the aluminum? It would have to be strong enough not to bend over after repeated shaking.

So, did you make something that wraps around the intake, or something that looks more like a wall between the intake and the rest of the engine (ala SCC project SE-R). Just curious because I've been planning on making one for myself soon, maybe tomorrow.

I think if you cut the metal so its a big box.. with another box on one end. And bend the smaller box 90 degrees so it attaches to the bolts.. And bend the bigger piece around the filter. But it would have to be thin metal for this. And that means the metal may bend and fall onto the intake after some use. Have to get it to rest on the bottom of the cone intake or something to keep it up. Gotta check out home depot. Sounds like an idea. Wonder if its worth any power. Or butt dyno power.

Which tools do you use to cut and shape the aluminum?

Heat shield

Has anyone tried to make, have had someone else make, or really know how to make a decent looking heat shield for a cone intake? are there really any noticed benefits w/one? check out this one at (for a Miata)

Okay guys....

The heat shield I made is very simple. I don't have pics yet, but I will get some soon and put them on my site. The heat shield is L-shaped. The heat shield starts on the inside portion the strut tower closest to engine just below where my strut tower brace crosses the engine bay. The heatshield goes to the battery and then wraps to the inside of the battery between the battery and cone. I figured I would shield the cone from the battery too because the battery gets pretty hot sometimes. You then cut out a section in the middle of the heatshield so that you can slide it over the intake pipe and MAF. The great thing is the cut you'll make will allow the stock intake tube to blow air in from underneath still. I'm gonna extend the stock intake tube right to the bottom of the shield so that almost all the heat won't get in.

When you pop your hood, all this will make more sense. It's all very straight forward. The shield turned out looking better than I ever thought it would too. All you need is sheet metal cutters to cut. Make sure you get some pretty thin metal. I think I used 16 guage.
