Exhaust wallet ouch!!!
Guys,
I got a 2000 cali emissions max with 165K on her. She is totally stock with the exception of the muffler that was just replaced. The problem came after the exhaust started rattling. Apparently the resonater with heat shield is rusted through, and the flux capacitors bolts are rusted, yada yada yada. The shop (not stealership) is telling me that they need the entire part from (not including) the new muffler up to and including the y pipe. They ran the part through their computer and it is only sold as 1 piece costing about 1200 for the part. What do you guys think. I live in PA and have to deal with emissions testing and inspection, but know nothing about this. If you could provide any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it.
thanks,
g

you could easily buy an aftermarket exhaust system and intall for much much cheaper than what they are quoting you.
You could get a decent stock-ish replacement system for about $300.
A nice performance exhaust with a decent sound for about ~$650.
I would not pay that shop, they are ripping you off.
Order an exhaust setup online and install it yourself at home, or have an org member stop by and install it for you for cheap

depending on where you live you may want to get a Stainless Steel to prevent rusting down the line.
If you just want something at a good price to replace the stock systems there are options
If you want something with some performance and sound to it there are options also
stock-ish:
http://rockauto.com/ (look up your year car, and exhaust system)
Performance:

I didnt know flux capacitors came stock in maximas. rusted bolts will really hinder your time travel abilities. Its better to mount them on the inside rather than near the exhaust like this one:
...I really hope you were joking and the shop didnt actually tell you that.

Lol, take it back to the shop and tell them to show you were the 'flux capacitor' bolts are located. Then call them a bunch of scammers and never go back again.
But ya, that shop is definitely ripping you off. Like MDeezy said you should be able to get it replaced for $300ish unless you need your cat replaced, but I doubt you would. What I would do if I were you would be to order a Cat-back online and install it yourself, or find someone in the PA regional forums to do it for ya.

My misunderstanding as I read the above comments quickly.....the above quote "they actually told me that" references the bill ($1200), not the flux capacitor comment, that was a joke....and obviously not a very good one....sorry

Check out Cattman. I had to replace my muffler right after i got my 00 Max because it had rusted and completely seperated itself from the flange. Everything from the cat back is like $700 and is well worth it. I had to use a sawsall to get my bolts off (not even my 500 ft-lb. impact wrench would cut it) If you are going to do it yourself, expect to spend most of your time getting the bolts off.

That shop should be reported to the BBB. They are trying to rip you off. A stainless exhaust can be had for $1200ish, but you don't need stainless. Go to another shop and get another estimate and never go back to the rip-off shop again

well you cant report them for high prices, they can charge whatever they want. On the other side of that they'll get no business if they charge too damn much, people will just go to a shop further down the street that will charge half of that, and they'll go there.

The price they quoted you is way too much. If you aren't looking for a performance upgrade, you should just go to a reputable muffler shop in your area for a second opinion and a quote. Muffler shops usually do custom work and can probably make whatever piece you need.
#16
unless I miss my guess they are quoting you with the converter/y-pipe and if you are in california it NEEDS to be OE only for emissions legality. that would make the price normal
#17
You can report them if they are quoting you things that do not need fixing and parts that do not need replacing.

Soon after buying my maxima i went to the stealership and got basically the same speech you got. I ended up calling this guy.
