what would you all think if i dropped a blue printed Q45 engine into my Max that is twin turboed at something like 7 or 9 psi each? my buddy had it in a Geo Storm running 12.50's with bottle. can't be done? i'm talking out my A$$? his Storm was valued at $25,000 with close to $37,000 dropped into it, that is, until it was permanentely left on the I5 tunnel in Seattle. but he says he has the engine and will part with it for $7,000. like they say, anything can be done with enough money. but back to the engine. hp ratings wise, i have no honest clue what the engine puts out or what it will be at on the wheels. just an idea that would be BAD AZZ.

Did he convert his GEO to RWD? Does it come with the tranny? I would think dropping the VQ35DE from the Pathfinder would be a better choice, adding a turbo to that, now your talking! Better yet, why not just take the RB26DETT out of the skyline along with the 6 speed tranny and convert your Max to AWD! That would kick some A**. Maybe, just maybe then you could add a GTR badge to the back! hehe

the geo

here's the scoop, from what i know anyways. this was all done in southern cali. it's a '90 Geo storm that did not have a frame built for it, that is, is/was a front wheel drive. that's the reason for only hitting 12.50's. but you have to remember that it runs something like 18.00 stock. the tranny was a five speed auto with a stage three shift kit. i know that you all are seeing the problems of adapting a stage three kit to a five speed auto, but it's got a new chip and the works. no max speed was ever figured because no body wanted to drive a FWD Storm to the limit but he had it going a radar confirmed 170 in fourth. i never saw the car personally but saw quite a few pictures as well as numerous video tapes of it. full dual Q45 exhaust with resonator tips. the idea was to make a sleeper that is drag car competition. the funny thing is that the Storm was sitting on 144 reverse 15" wires. like i said, if you got the money, you can do just about anything.

Try this...

The VQ30DE is twin-turboed in Japan. Get a JDM turbo manifold, a couple turbos, and there ya go.

Don't 'drop' a VQ35DE in your car. The head profile on the Max is a lot better, so just do a conversion. You'll end up with more power than a Pathfinder. And SCC's Dave Coleman mentioned a 3.4L conversion using a VG30DE(300ZX/J30) crank that shouldn't require new connecting rods like the 3.5L job will.

Couple of things.

First off, if I understood you correctly, that your friend has a Geo Storm with a turbocharged Q45 engine in it, then he's full of sh*t. No way. The Q45 is a V8, albeit a small one. There's no way in hell it'd fit in a FWD car. And what damn tranny is he using to match that? Q45 is RWD, so he's not using that tranny. And the Storm tranny would never ever be able to fit the Q45 engine nor take the torque.

Ditto the above comments in regards to your though of putting that engine into your Maxima. Won't fit (too wide), and you wouldn't have a tranny to use either.

One alternative bet is to look into dropping a Pathfinder VQ35DE into your Maxima. Even that's chancy...that engine uses a taller block and different intake manifold. It may not fit under your hood (too tall). You might be able to fit your old manifold onto that engine, though. No idea if it'll work, though.

Your best bet is to ditch the Maxima and get a real sports car...RWD...where you'll have more engine swap alternatives, and maybe have a tranny that'll take a 2X or whatever increase in torque. The Maxima tranny sucks (5spd and auto). Plus they're FWD, so traction sucks.

I'd have to call shennigans as well. Having a good friend with a Q45 and an ex-gf with a 91 Geo Storm that I've wrenched on it's rather hard to imagine shoehorning a 4.0L V8 into what's basically a crappy little Isuzu. (The storm is what an Impulse?)

Even if you transverse mounted it you would still need a FWD tranny for the car. Not to mention the weight balance, new springs and shocks, and unless you were very insane, some upgraded brakes.

WTF?? Left in Seattle?? I live in Seattle, give me the # and I'll call him and maybe arrange to see it. It really does not make any sense to swap such a big engine and still keep it FWD.

i have no opinion on this

as i think it is truly gay to argue whether or not you believe it was done. The truth is that its possible. utterly retarded but possible.

however i lost in my civic against a geo storm. but he ran an 11.3. with an isuzu motor. So they can go fast. Its all yellow with 5 foot bars hanging out the *** end. I think its been in turbo twice, two tiny pics...

the point is that yes anything can go fast. just gotta do it. even geo storms. and one more thing for all yall haters.

even geo metros go fast.

A V8 is the same length as an inline-4...

So the Q45 engine should fit. But, we still have the problem of mating a rwd engine to a fwd car. Don't forget the extra weight from the much bigger engine.
The reason the Storm only ran a 12 sec ET is because you can only do so much before you get diminishing returns. There's also the matter of traction on a fwd car. It prolly didn't have any wheelie-bars or anything to plant the front tires like the racers do.

Re: i have no opinion on this

Just to clarify, I never said a Storm couldn't run that fast. Anything is possible. What I argued is that the guy has a TC'd Q45 motor. Comeon, it doesn't take much brainpower to figure out that the engine doesn't fit. I truly find it difficuly to believe that someone would believe that crap.

Unless the guy widened and lengthened the engine bay by like 1.5 ft in either direction...uh uh, ain't gonna happen.

So, if having any friggin common sense makes me gay, then I guess I must be a flamer.

clarification

like i said, i've never seen the car. it was wrecked in an I5 tunnel. he lives here in SPokane, anybody around here want to call him, i'll give you his number. he could probably explain it all better than me. but i'm not a car mechanic so i can not explain exactly how it was done. the firewall as well as engine bay was modified to fit the engine. blazer blocks where used to support the extra weight. it was not the Q45 tranny, i don't think. but like i said before, if you have enough money i.e. $37,000, you could probably make it work. i don't think i will be dropping this engine in. i am thinking about the Rb26DETT or just getting a new car all together. maybe an older R32.

Rb26dett in a maxima? Any idea on how your gonna get an engine that's twice as long as a v6 into your maxima engine bay?

No, jamie is Jamie Diaz, owner of Conecrazy.com. PrimerAl is Al Abadilla, co-owner, well known throught SE-R.net and the SE-R Mailing List.

First of all, I consider Dave Coleman a fellow gearhead, hardcore Nissan enthusiast, and very credible writer. For all of the crap that he does for Japanese cars (sport compacts in general) he does NOT deserve to be called a dumbass. Actually, it's people like MaximaMike who put a rotten taste in people's mouth about kids and import-enthusiasm.

Credibility? Jamie is putting a GS-R engine into his Civic, started Conecrazy.com as an outlet for the people who are sick of drag racing and all the bull**** behind it. Myself, I've had THREE Maximas, don't think I don't know crap about your community. I was a member of the OLD SCHOOL Maxima Mailing List, I was the guy who hand fabricated mods for my automatic 93 Maxima GXE and my 87 Maxima SE. I've had Nissans all my life, from my dad's Datsun 310, to the 83 I wrapped around a tree when I was young with the intelligence of a MaximaMike, to the two Nissans I stated above, to the Infiniti G20 that I made almost every mod for, to the Nissan 240SX that I'm dropping a Silvia motor into... don't insult me by defending a foulmouth kiddie like MaximaMike.

uh no... Al and I are not the same person. For one thing, realize that Dave Coleman holds a wealth of infomation that we all can use. To call him a "dumbass" because it doesn't agree with your ideas is plain ludicrous.

okay I admit it was childish to post the way I did and out of line. call it stress, call it whatever.. I still stand where I am. Hell he should have called Einstein a dumbass while he was at it.

Who me? I wasn't being childish, and I am sorry I presented myself as such. I only flame when I need to, and I don't see anything wrong with my post. Jamie might have gone over the top but he was just defending Coleman's good name. To call someone a dumbass without warrant... well, I kind of understand because MaximaMike isn't even old enough to vote, so calling him a stupid kid is beating a dead horse.

If you want to see the good things we are doing, check out our mailing list... it's the ONLY ONE on the Internet that Russel Zotz behaves on. Just ask Shing, even he will attest to that.

Again, sorry for coming off as an ***, but a nice person won't slam a real enthusiast without cold hard facts. It's true, though, I've owned more Nissans than most of you guys have clean underwear (I know some of you college students rotate and invert!), so don't take me as any kind of "newbie"

Primer,

I've owned a few cars in my life also. Hell, my first car didn't have an engine, tranny, seats or decent paint( 69' 510) My 2nd car(510) was a 3-sp auto that I converted to 5-sp and a 1800sss engine. So not all of us here are grean college students .

Most of the confusion regarding the SCC artice(D. Coleman) is that he states his dream engine. Not anywhere in the article did he say that the parts he names are compatible or not. Just for the sake of his "dream" engine, he makes the HUGE assumption that the pistons, rods and crankshfts all interchange.

When most of the guys here read that article, they seem to "overlook" the fact that while Nissan has a rep for parts interchangiblity(ie.. 240z flywheel fits a 6-bolt L20b 4cyl!), one should not assume that these parts just swap over.

One last note. Usually here, one gets a reply that's along the same lines as the post. So if you post w/ a aggressive manner, expect a reply that about the same. :0

You're entirely correct, but it's a bit idiotic calling someone a dumbass. Especially someone I consider a friend. Dave has helped me out in the past, some things you don't forget.

I co-moderate a message board, I know how it goes and trust me, I expected the naysay. On a related note, I wasn't being agressive, I wasn't the one who said "fudgepacker"... hehe, Jamie is on his own in that one LOL. Anyway, I looked like an ******* cuz I stated my credentials. It's common practice, I won't let just anyone diagnose my son's sickness until I knew he/she was a doctor. Till then, check out my current project car, the 240SX... this one's gonna break the bank!

Alright, it was wrong of me to call Dave a dumbass. I'm sorry if anyone was offended. What I meant is that the article was misleading in the information it gave. That engine would cost thousands in engine work alone. Al, you've known me since I've started here well over 3 years ago. You know I'm prone to go off if started with. Sorry to start **** with you bro. And Jamie, I don't know you, but sorry for whatever.

Al has been around for ever. He's an old fart. I swear to you, I've learned most of what I know about Nissan's from Al(hmm that could be the problem. j/k). he's been aroudn Maximas longer than a lot of people on here have even had their drivers license.

Al just doesn't post on here that often... I think he's lost faith in the Maxima... log suspension and the works. Oh and that Jerry H. guy thtat worked for Nissan ddint' help his faith any I don't think.

Truth be told, Al is literally the most hardcored/grassroot guy I've ever met. He is the only one I know that has a parts wahser, drill press, welder, pipe bender, air compressor, powder coater, oven for powder coating, and a few other things you usually find in a shop, in his garage.

anyways, all I am saying is Al's been around for a while, he didn't just show up to flame.

just wanted to know what you all thought. as for an RB26DETT, that's just a little fantasty from playing GT2 too much. i am thinking about either doing a conversion to look like a skyline next summer with another engine.

What engine doesn't cost thousands? Seriously though, even a real simple SR20 drop-in will cost a bunch if you wanted it done right.

If you think about it, getting a gear casing to match a bellhousing doesn't take a billion bucks, just a little ingenuity. Blocks can be machined to accomodate different cranks, etc etc... there's nothing new to it, and there certainly isn't anything misleading about Coleman's article. You have to understand, Coleman was talking pure vision that time, so take it with a grain of salt. Furthermore, he was talking about putting a dream motor in a 240SX, is that why it's of no worth to you? :-)

Speaking of engine swaps, I've been asking around to see who's done the VQ into 3rd Generation Maxima? I'd hate to be the first person to do it, my wife needs a new car...

Al, you've known me since I've started here well over 3 years ago. You know I'm prone to go off if started with. Sorry to start **** with you bro.
Sorry I got pissed, not a nice way to make an introduction, eh? Till then, I'll save your a$$ kickin for the track... you say you have a project car? Give me a URL...

Heh, Nissan diehard, although right now I'd rather be driving an S2000

I think he's lost faith in the Maxima... log suspension and the works. Oh and that Jerry H. guy thtat worked for Nissan ddint' help his faith any I don't think.
I did for about a year or so. I thought I'd have every generation of Maxima until the day I died. I've been watching Nissan's progress, though, and things reallly do seem promising. The three most intriguing Nissans:

1) Nissan XVL concept - complete IS300 killer
2) Nissan S15 - geezus can a coupe get any sexier?
3) Nissan X-Trail - RAV4 killer with 280ps SR20VET

If the 90s were for Honda and Toyota, then this decade is for Nissan's comeback. If anything the G20's replacement (RWD VQ powered? :-) will be anything far from underpowered.

Truth be told, Al is literally the most hardcored/grassroot guy I've ever met. He is the only one I know that has a parts wahser, drill press, welder, pipe bender, air compressor, powder coater, oven for powder coating, and a few other things you usually find in a shop, in his garage.
You just made me realize that I spent too much time at the Garage. Thanks for the intro Shing.
