I just bought one and was told that they are illegal in some states, looks like its only 2. Here's a list if anyone is interested, not sure how official it is.

Radar jammers are illegal in all states.
Laser jammers are illegal in Nebraska, Minnesota, Utah, California, Oklahoma, Virginia and Washington DC.
Don't get a radar jammer, not only is it illegal but it does not work. Also, "passive" radar jammers which are legal NEVER, EVER, work.
Also note that as one has said that radar detectors are illegal in VA, NY, and possibly Conneticut. However, I heard that they removed the radar ban in CT. I'm not sure though.
Radar detectors are indirectly illegal in California and Minnesota. It is illegal to hang anything on your windshield there. But if you have it attatched to your windshield then you are fine.

If you wanted to mount your detector legally velcro would normally be the way to go.(Mount it to the dashboard of course.)

The top three is the V1, escort 9500ci(Or the escort 8500 X50? I can't remember which one.), and The Beltronics STI driver. Whatever is the best depends on the preference of the user. A big selling point for the V1 is that not only does it offer good protection, but it has arrows that tells you where the threat is coming from. The Escort performs better than the V1 when it comes to detecting threats but does not have arrows to tell you where the threat is. The Beltronics STI driver is the ONLY radar that can not be detected by the new radar detector detector called Spectre IV in the real world and it also offers great protection as well. You can't go wrong with any of the three. It depends on what you want.
I'm using an older Escort 4500 in my Z, I know it detects all the standard signals + Laser. Is the range of the 4500 far less than the newer models (8500+)?

The Escort 4500 is a great radar detector. What you would get from the 8500 is less falsing and a significant boost in range. But I wouldn't say that it would be enough range to justify spending $300 dollars unless you like driving at 90+ mph in a 70 zone or you just want to have the best possible detection. Even if you keep your 4500, you probably won't be getting a ticket anytime soon because you already have good protection.

Radar Detectors in New York: Radar detectors are legal to use in New York, however they may not be used in commercial vehicles.
Laser Jammers in New York: Laser jammers are legal to use in New York.
I have mine installed above the tint line and hard wired into the curiosity lights.

Radar jammers are illegal in all parts of the US.
It depends on what detector you are using and what kind of RDD the LEO is running. If they are running VG-2, supposedly every modern radar detector is immune to VG-2.
