Nissan's got issues

I think we were all disappointed by the finish of the Altima. Looks great, cheesy build, outrageous price. But if we've already taken the test drive and submitted the coupon for the free bag, why another one in the mail? They paid for 1st class mail on the 2nd mailing--huge expense, why not priority instead? Now they announce that they are replacing every steel wheel on every 2001+ Nissan Sentra due to defects, but they don't have enough rims. So bring the car in and let us check, and then come back when we have wheels. How much materials and labor will that be? It's cheaper to do things right in the first place.

I think this car company has come down to the 2003 Maxima, it's do or die. Like 3rd and 14 or something on the home 15 yard-line, ya know?

2003 Maxima? More like the 2004 Maxima. It doesn't make sense for Nissan to revamp the current Maxima for 2002, and then scrap it in one year for the newer model. I expect the 2004 Maxima to begin selling in June 2003.

The coupon for the free watch/bag is only "one per household." So you can't get the free gift twice. But I agree..what a waste of marketing dollars to send us brochures. Granted, 99% of the people they mail probably don't know anything about the Altima.

Re: Nissan's got issues

This is a forum right? Good, means I can give my 0.02 and not get flamed for it!

I think what Nissan is doing on the 2001+ Sentra rims is very credible, but definitely worthy of criticism.

Firstly, Nissan does not make its rims, no car manufacturer does. Only thing Nissan makes is sheet metal, engines and some casted metal items. Suppliers make the rims, and quality issues often come up once the vehicles are sold. Might take 1 year, might take 10 years, but it's still a quality issue and it's not Nissan's fault. Supplier probably botched a whole supply of rims and only realized it several months later. And it's steel rims!!!!!!!!!!!! Not some fancy alloy rim with ultra-thin spokes or anything that could be of questionable design.

The rim issue is obviously a quality problem with the supplier's fabrication or manufacturing process.

The first priority is identifying the vehicles that are affected and replacing those first to prevent danger and damage to the vehicle owners -- the best way to identify the rims that are affected are to request all owners to have their vehicle inspected asap by the dealership.

I don't want to be a poor sucker to have a defective rim, drive to the dealership and find out they ran out because they replaced the rims on every vehicle that had come in regardless of condition. If this happens, I'd know my rims were bad, and that they didn't have replacement rims and I'd have no vehicle. Reminds me of the time Ford dealers ran out of tires.

If you know of any car manufacturer that stocks 60,000 steel rims (15,000 vehicles x 4 rims) for overnight delivery especially for cars that rolled off the line 6 months ago, let me know because I don't.

A problem came up on the rims after the vehicles were sold, and Nissan is dealing with it in the best way possible! They're not being an *** about it and keeping quiet until the service centers notice it. It's publicly posted on their website, they've issued voluntary recall notices to inform all owners, they've explained the problem - is anything wrong with that?

Every manufacturer has recalls. Sorry to disappoint you but even Mercedes and Audi and Toyota have recalls on new vehicles. It's a car, with parts made by 1000's of suppliers. Don't judge ANY manufacturer on the faults of their suppliers. I prefer to judge them on the overall vehcile and on how they handle customers.

I think Nissan is doing a very good job considerng they were close to bankruptcy, and had been running at a loss for more than 5 years until the Nissan Revival Plan (NRP) came into effect a few years ago. Since the NRP, we've had the new Sentra (major improvement from the old one), new Altima, new Maxima, Xterra, new Pathfinder, new Frontier, the upcoming Fairlady Z, and the return of the SE-R. And don't forget the Infinity models too (they're Nissans!!!): G20, Q45, and new 2003 G35 (new 4 door Skyline). I've already seen the G35 rear-wheel drive prototype in person last week, and I must say that car is amazing, Just the front-end suspension is a sight to see - truly nothing like previous Nissan cars and definitely something worth driving!!!

SO here's my 0.02, I'm proud of what Nissan has done in turning the company around. And please don't blame Nissan for evey small thing that pops up.

The new Altima (TK) is defintitely amazing, but I feel the interior needs some work - Nissan will most likely improve it for 2003.

I'm not some lunatic who's blind to the truth - I feel Nissan interiors are not the best in the world. But everything else is getting better and better. Hopefully, the interior will catch up to a level we can all accept.

My 0.02 again

you tell em pocket! Personally, I think the Nissan interiors are good compared to Accord, Camry, 300M, whatever car in it's price class. I like the interior on my 2k Max, it's symmetric, clean, and creates a sense of space, especially from the passenger side.

Nissan always seems to be in a fog. Bad supplier, sure. Like the 4th gen fuel sending units and 5-spd reversing swithches, but replacing these items 2-3 times on each vehicle adds up. And ultimately, it's not the supplier that takes the blame.

Every car co and their sister now have 3-spoke steering wheels, and what do the Max and Altima have for 2002?

Toyota always seems to be 2 years ahead. They got rid of the cheap prop rod for the Camry hood in 2002, like 1996. What did Altima do? What type of rear suspension does the 2002 Maxima have?

Just observations my friend. If Nissan doesn't want suggestions then keep making cars the way they are, plenty of us will still be customers since we've paid off our 4th gens and they have little resale anyway.
