Painting Muffler and Inside of Tips

I have a 6th Gen and I've read somewhere that someone painted their muffler black and the inside as well so that it looks like a single pipe. Im basically looking for the type of paint that I would need to use to do this. There will be chrome still but its more like blacking out the muffler. Also, since I was rear ended I can litteraly pull the tips off the new muffler they installed, is there any way of keeping them in place without welding?

Paint over chrome, especially with high heat won't work so well. You'll probably have to sand it for the paint to stick. You will need to use really high-temp paint. The muffler/tips will get extremely hot.

I painted my muffler black using high temperature engine paint. Should work for you too. You will probably have to sand the areas you are going to paint and tape off parts you want to leave chrome. You can get the paint at most auto parts stores.

Your definitely gonna have to sand it down for paint to stick. High-temp engine paint will work fine once you sand the chrome. Good luck.

with time they turn black anyway.

I say three coats with lots of cure time between each.

2nd. I would apply at least one coat of primer, three coats of paint and a non gloss protective coat or two. This will keep it looking great for a long time. Lots of cure time and low humidity will keep it all from flaking prematurely, too.

1. Plan on repainting them every so often, regardless of paint or preparation.

2. Two or three tacks with a MIG welder will fix the loose tips issue. Can't think of any other way to do it that'll work anywhere near as well. A garage or even a muffler shop ought to be able to do it for cheap as it's about a 5 minute job.
