certified mechanic and what to check when buying a used car

wats good to the maxima fam. I have a couple of questions. 1. Where can i get a certified mechanic to help me check a car that i am intrested in and how much do they charge. Some might say getting a certified mechanic is a waist of money during this hard times? 2. When buying a used car especially a maxima 02 or 03, what are the key things to look for while checking the car out at the dealer. 3. Should i buy a warranty with the dealer or shop around else where? your suggestions will be emensely appreciated.

Congrats on your search for a new car. 5.5 Gen is a great car. Here's some pointers:

1. Spell check
2. English dictionary
3. Read the stickies on the 5th gen forum. Donate, and do a search and all your answers will come up.

Good luck

Around here, a basic inspection (100pt) costs $50-60 for them to come out. My friend found them under automotive inspection in the yellow pages. For a comprehensive one where they check compression, take the wheels off to check tread, suspension, axles, and brakes... that's $150-300. When my other friend bought an 05 Carrera 4s, he paid $300, and they checked everything. Told him 2 dash lights didn't come on (no big deal), some wearing on the seat belt (previous owner musta been fat, cuz you had to pull the seatbelt all the way out), run-out on 1 of the rotors was close to limit, and some other things. I dunno if $300 is worth to spend on a used Maxima... but it's up to you and the level of satisfaction you want.
Dr J

edit: oh yeah, for the $300, they did a basic fluid analysis on the engine oil. They can also analyze automatic trans fluid too, but his car was stick.
