Importance of Fire Extinguisher in car midnightpass

I was cruising on I-95 in Vegas yesterday when I saw smoke coming from the hood so I pulled over and grabbed my extinguisher and raised the hood and blew out the fire. It appears that a pin hole leak developed in the Wickes fuel filter that was installed 2 weeks ago. It was installed closer to the throttle body so it would be more accessable. Gas was spurting out and the cruise control and many hoses and wire harnesses were burned and the hood blistered. Luckily I put out the flames before the entire car became engulfed!! Has anyone ever seen a fuel filter spring a leak?? There were no rub marks on the filter and it wasn't melted. I've asked my insurance company to start a subragation action against the filer maker. I figure the damage will run about $3-4 thousand. Like I said, it could have been much worse!! Oh, by the way I hope the insurance co. doesn't hassle me over my mods. I called them twice and tried to tell them I modded the car and all they said was save the receipts. I had the car flat bedded to a performance shop because I didn't want any parts replacer, I mean technician telling me "we can't work on your car its been modified".

That sucks. What set the gas ablaze though? I can't think of anything under the hood hot enough to be at or above gasoline's flash point.
