Should I get a 3rd or 4th gen?

Right now I drive my mom's old 3rd black GXE. At the end of the summer next year, i'm gonna have to give up the max to my sister. I'm savin up and I'm gonna buy a new maxima before then, though (a 5spd).

Now, my question is: should I get a 3rd or 4th gen. Which car has more (and obviously more efficient) mods? Which one's cheaper to mod for hp output? Which one's easiest to mod? And finally, which one will last me the longest (say I get one with 100,000 miles all ready on it)?

Now, I have about $2000 righ now, but I'm tryin to find a good job and bring that up. My goal is $8000 by August. Now, if I go out and buy a 3rd gen, I'll have a lot of $ left over for mods and for a new paint job (3rd or 4th gen, I'm getting repainted no matter what). If I save up and get a 4th gen, I will be scrapin bottom and probably spend the rest of next year tryin to make up for my losses.

4th gen cause its more reliable. More mods. By summer you will get
97-98 5spd close to 100K Maybe better. Good luck

It's not fair to classify all third gens together. The third gen VE is one awesome car. I dont know why anyone would want a VG(no offense guys).I hate the looks of the 4th gen, and although it has some more manufactures, it doesnt really have more mods other than s/c, and some appearance stuff. A third gen VE can be made just as fast if not faster than a VQ, and look better doing it the whole time. "More reliable" all comes down to regualar maintainance, how the owner takes care of the car, etc. Nobody can really say 4th gens are more reliable than 3rd gens. Maybe just because 4th gens in general are newer, but in time, age will start to catch up on the 4th gens just like alot of the 3rd gens out there. VE all the way.

Hey...

How do you tell if the engine's a VE? Are all the SE's VE, cause I've seen some auto SE's (are those VE too)? Your right, I think i'm gonna go out and get a 3rd gen and just use all the extra $ to mod the thing enough to surpass anything ever done to a max. Externally, the body kits for a 3rd gen are cheaper than those for a 4th gen too.

If money is no issue, go buy yourself a 4th gen(preferably 97-98), because I truly believe that there are more manufacturers interested in making good after market parts for them. 4th gens have an excellent engine in them, and most you will find are in better shape than older 3rd gens. However, there are some reasons to consider a 3rd gen. You can find one in better shape for the money than 4th gens, and there are many mods available for them as well short of boosted performance(unless your max.org user name is Czar!!) Here's the list of advantages/disadvantages from my perspective for each gen.

89-94 pros
exterior styling perhaps less bland than 4th gen
Independant rear susp.
excellent build quality overall
in general, cheaper/better shape for the money
89-94 cons
BOSE/windows/exhaust studs
archaic interior styling

VE pros
LSD diff.
great power/high revving
mucho technology for the day (coil/on ign., VTC, timing chain)

VE cons
VTC's
no significant power adders besides NOS
only made 3 years/no proven track record

VG pros
Good low end torque
Z31 turbo parts will fit
reliable engine track record

VG cons
timing belt every 60K
in general, pretty slow

95+ pros
Great modern looking dash
Wonderful engine
lots of aftermarket support
lack of major problems
S/C gets this car very fast

95+ cons
IMO generic exterior styling
beam rear axle
no LSD
lots of cost cutting; cheaper feel to it

eventhough this is my last max, if I was to get another it be the 4th gen.....but only for 2 reasons over a 3rd gen.....coilovers and an SC......two things our 3rd gens will never see in prod, but other than those two products 3rd gens just have a timeless look that was lost after '94!
