too perserve your trans....mid RPM range slips...wears clutch faster

to preserve your clutch....drops from about three grand...puts un-due stress on trans and differential.

personally a clutch job is MUCH cheaper than a new trans...believe me...I've done BOTH on my maxima...

While we're on this subject(again), I am going to ask(again): How do I engage first gear properly with out hurting the trans or the clutch?

You're going to "hurt" the clutch. It's inevitable. You just can't get around it. It's just how fast you hurt it. The clutch wears. That's just a fact of life. I've typically on my other cars, slipped the clutch without giving it gas. Once the car starts to move some I give it a little gas and release the clutch all at the same time. Usually I have the clutch out by the time the car passes 1500rpm. I also don't hold the car on a hill with the clutch. That combination is about as little wear as you can put on the clutch without slamming the tranny.

I've gotten my best and most consistent 60's with a 2500RPM clutch slip.

4000-4400 slight clutch slip and then release the clutch quickly while feeding it gas. I don't slip the clutch for any longer than a second. Wind up the rpms to 4000 or so, slowly release the clutch while keeping right foot at the same position on the gas pedal. Once you start rolling, feed it a little more and release the clutch quickly. DO NOT "DUMP" THE CLUTCH. All you will get is a ton a wheel spin. The goal is to NEVER let you rpms drop below 3000 once the clutch becomes engaged.
