I think it looks very nice. I heard it tested very well against other cars as far as handling goes, but the magazine #'s show it's not very fast, at least not as it was expected. I think Car&Driver? ran 15.7.. Which is around the same time as the 2.0 SE for 2000-2001 ran. Other then that, I love the way it looks.
My son bought one a week and a half ago and I can tell you it is awesome. As it is being tested it may not be the fastest in it's class but the power is always there when you need it, the shifter and clutch are wonderful, and the seats are extremely comfortable. When shifting into second gear you can squeal the tires with no effort at all. It feels as strong as last year's Maxima and that ain't bad. If you go test drive one you will fall in love but for now go check out freshalloy.com and see what everyone is saying. There are also a few pictures posted.

I went to buy a '00 Sentra to replace our '93. After test driving a '97 SE 5spd Max, we bought that.
I like the look of it too. The red seats, 6spd shifter, and that blacked out expanded metal grill, looks cool, and probably cost effective. I was thinking that grill would look cool on my Max.

A very nice car, IMHO...
If I didn't alrady have a Max, an SE-R would probably be in my garage. The starting MSRP of just under $16k is great, and not many cars in the class can match the equipment level or the price.
I keep reading that SCC article, and the thing that sticks out in my mind is that it was just as fast on their roadcourse track as an Integra Type R. The SE-R has less power[at the flywheel and the wheels] and a less sophisticated suspension than the Type R.
This leaves me wondering how Nissan was able to pull that off, considering the SE-R was down on flywheel power from the start, and made even less at the wheels than expected. I don't think the bigger tires would make that much of a difference. I guess that means that the SE-R would be even more of a screamer if it made the power it was supposed to have.

Car and Driver ran a 15.7 with the 6 speed V spec a while ago
Someone just posted that another mag ran a 0-60 of like 7.2 and a 1/4 of 15.4.... pretty damn good
I also read that stuff about it being just as fast on the road course as the Type R
That's cool, the car must handle great, I want to see some serious mods for it, so they can be made really quick like the original SE-Rs. As the value drops over a couple of years.. it may be a good used car buy.... hmmmmm
SCC tested it at 15.7 in the 1/7 and 0-60 in 7.8. They dynoed it at 141hp and 150 ft-lbs (at the wheels). They believe that the claimed 175hp at the crank is a long way from the 141hp produced on the dyno. 34 hp just evaporated into thin air. The salom mph was 67.6 -exactly the same as the Type R.
I test drove a pre-production SE-R in July, and all I can say is, I am thrilled I got my 95 Max SE.
The SE-R is a sweeet car, but does not compare to the Max. Why I think so:
1) Max is heavier, than the SE-R and IMO, handled alot better at higher speeds (felt like it stuck to the ground more - I wasn't worried about pushing the Max, but I felt the SE-R was 'floating' coz of its weight).
2) Interior quality in the Max is more luxurious!
I do think that the cheaper SE-R seats have better back support though
But I think they went a little overboard with the red inserts!
3) Both cars use premium (SE-R recommends 91+ for maximum performance), yet fuel economy is about the same. The VQ pumps out more than the TR25 engine in the SE-R.
4) Max is bigger (interior, especially back seats & trunk room), and I think the 4th Gen looks alot better than the Sentra!
However, the SE-R is a lighter car, hence it'll probably be able to outrun a stock Max. Also, the LSD is nice.
But the price range is different, so whatever rocks your boat dude!

But judging solely from the track #s.... Say the V spec even runs a 15.5 .... Stock auto 4th gens can do a 15.6-16.1 or so??? Maybe faster but I have not heard of anyone running even a 15.6 stock.
Nice looking car, but you would think it would be faster with 175hp.
If i was looking for a 4th car, this one would be it - although I would likely go with the base SE-R 5spd, as the interior of the spec V doesn't do much for me.
