QUESTION - Idle is dipping RPM
QUESTION - Idle is dipping RPM
I have a 97, when its at idle at 700 rpm and I turn off the ac, the rpm dips down to about 500-400 rpm. It sounds like its going to stall but it goes back up to 700 rpm. is this normal for it to dip that low? im not shure if it was always like this but I just recently noticed this.
Let me see if I can help......
First off, I think your idle is too low. With the A/C on it should be a little higher than 700rpm. I haven't run A/C here in NYC in a few months, but I think it should be around 800rpm. Now when you turn the A/C off your normal idle should be about 650-700 rpm. I would check the IACV. (Idle-Air-Control-Valve) This valve tends to go bad over time, I think more like 100K miles. Get yourself a Haynes manual they have a procedure to test the valve, and if necessary a very clear breakdown of how to replace the valve. Bottom line check out your IACV and see if that is at fault. I'd give you more info but I'm at work and dont have my Hanes manual here with me.
Good Luck!

ok but this only happends when the car is at a stop and the car idles normal when the ac is on but as soon as I turn it off, it drops to about 500 and then goes back to 700. My idle setting is fine but its just that second of it droping as soon as I turn off ac.

I pretty much have the same problem. Mine will sometimes stay at 500 at a light, without going back up. I've cleaned my throttle body, (it did it before that), K&N air filter, changed plugs, fuel filter, etc... My '96 GXE (RIP) did it too. My current '97 SE has 60,000 miles, and so did the '96. OT, my '96 GXE had a recall for the front and rear oxygen sensors and water seperator (P8152 campaign, according to my dealership). I'm going to see if this may affect '97s tomorrow. Just some info for you.
