Maxima among cars failing low-speed bumber test.

I found this article interesting, although I think it only applies to those who are not mechanically inclined and have trouble performing basic tasks on their cars, such as replacing a bumper.

In the tests, the cars’ bumpers are rammed straight into a solid barrier at 6 mph in the front and rear. One front and one rear corner are also subjected to 3 mph impacts. Current federal standards call for 2.5 mph for the front and rear barrier portion of their tests, and 1.5 mph for the corner impacts
So basically they tested the bumpers at 2x the federal standard and were suprised at their findings. Seems logical that the costs were higher then expected.

Who knows,... perhaps the insurance giants are behind these "tests" so they can justify their ever rising premiums.

Where are the pics?

That was the 95/96 and the 97 after the upgrades same test
Rear bumpers on 1995-96 models allowed more than $2,000 damage in a 5 mph pole impact (left). Bumpers on 1997-99s are much improved. They allowed little damage in the same test (right).

is there anyway to put steel bumpers? I miss my bumpers from my 83 benz thing was a TANK! imagine being the first to crash final destination style from black ice to a concrete bumper at 40mph and only have a messed up front license plate to show for it if I was in a max or really any other car with cheap crappy plastic bumpers it wouldve been totaled like the other cars that night
