Are you looking at building your own from scratch or would you prefer a pre-built and bent exhaust?

Also, catback, full exhaust or what?

400 for a stock exhaust is alot, just go with a custom job for that price, and you get to pick your own mufflers, and better performance of course!

Napa has the entire Bosal OEM exhaust for a pretty decent price...

But if you want to go aftermarket, and you aren't really going for a power/"sound" upgrade, a Megan Racing exhaust might be the way to go. They're a little throaty, but still pretty quiet.

I'd say spend the extra $100 and get the Cattman 2.5" Cat-back. It's something like $599 and has a respectable sound. And the added benefit of power gains that are confirmed.

really? I guess megan racing got their **** together cause from what I remember, having a megan exhaust was like having your own little coffee can equipped honda civic in the trunk making all the exhaust noises for the max....

if you're suggesting megan I'll suggest OBX
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/OBX-C...Q5fAccessories

this is even cheaper

Well, a friend of mine had one on his Max...it didn't sound too terrible unless he stomped on it.

That's the thing. Most if not all exhausts sound acceptable unless you floor it.

I had my apexi ws catback for a few months before I got a ypipe and it was very quiet. At idle there was just a very very slight rumble and at wot it was kinda 350z sounding but still quieter.

Well, yeah. I'm just saying...I thought this kid wasn't planning on hot-rodding his car. Just looking for something non-OEM. I mean, I'm not saying MR is the only choice. Just a suggestion...

I just bought the Megan Catback, it was $360 shipped from ebay. It has a built in resonator in the mid pipe to quiet upper rpm "canister" rattle. You know, the honda fart can bumble bee rattle you hear quite so often? Nonexistant with their new catback. Its quiet-er and throatier than just about any other aftermarket exhaust out there IMHO. I found a compilation of exhaust clips on either this site or some other forum I frequent, which led to my decision to go with Megan Racing. I'll try to find the link.

Ill get out and do that at some point today.

*EDIT* Link Found, 98GleMax, Click Here: http://forums.maxima.org/4th-generat...und-clips.html

The actual sound clips can be found in the 3rd post, although the first two posts are very informative and worth a good read.

It looks so bad. The sound in the first vid is bad as well. The ones later on actually sound nice...

Here's a little in car pull video I just took. I thought I had an actual sound clip of just revving with the camera behind the muffler but I failed and just took a picture instead of video. I'll have a new video posted by sometime tonight. Let me know what you all think.

You can't judge an exhaust by how it sounds from the inside. I have a couple leaks in my headers, one I found others haven't. The little shield on the firewall protecting some hard lines is buzzing like crazy. When the windows and everything is closed none of those noises come through, just a nice exhaust tone. With the windows down or from the outside, the leaks are very easy to hear and the buzzing is embarrassing.

I think, personally, one of the best exhaust notes I've ever heard on a Max was a system that had the HKS rear section and I think a res. delete. I don't know if he had any other components, or if it was just a catback, but it sounded decent. Loud, but decent.

The video's floating around YouTube somewhere I think...

Didn't STILLEN use HKS rear sections in their 4th gen exhausts? They were one of the raspier ones that were available...

It was a 5.5 gen, sorry. Sounds good, though. Very 350z-ish.

I know it's not what he's looking for. But it just made me remember the video. Still waiting on him to tell us what kind of exhaust note he wants, though...

i have a 95 and my exhaust is stock except the muffler. when i got the car is had a APEXi fart can on it. i think it had a nice sound it was not TOO loud but for the fact that it was a fart can it had to go so i threw on a knock off flowmaster and it works. it is deff alot louder inside the car but out side its not much different and its not a ricer fart can.

if you want ill sell you my APEXi can its still in pretty good shape other than the bottom is beat up a little from scrapping the ground some but its not ground threw at all. if your interested shoot me a PM
