2nd gear grinding problems?

Anyone else have issues with 2nd gear grinding when shifting?
This only happens when I am wrapping out 1st and hit 2nd fast, 2nd gear just grinds if I put it in fast, if I pull it down slowly and let it go in with ease, it works fine, but not fast. I know this has got to be hurting the tranny, but I have no idea what to do to fix this! Any ideas?

Car has done this since I got it.

I have MT-90 in the tranny.

Sounds like Russ is about to go through his third tranny... Nissan isn't going to like this.

2nd, 1st 5spd issue. But this has always happened since I had the car. Friend drove it when I first got it and he grinded 2nd. It's always been hard for some reason.

I also have a similar problem with my 97. It doesn't want to shift from 1st to 2nd easily. It's only sporadic and happens when the tranny's warm or cold and happens whether I shift fast or slow. I have Amsoil in the gear box. I'm begining to wonder if the tranny's going to fail or if it's some other problem. If it fails, I hope it does it before the warranty goes away

Mine seems to only happen when redlining 1st gear then shifting fast, if i shift slow it will go in. It is also hard to shift when cold or sometimes warm. Today I drove 70 miles stop n go and has been fine. So I dunno!

Hmmm where is the fluid at? Also what kind of fluid does it take?

sounds like your still shifting into 2nd gear with the clutch already engaging too much, try shifting the actual gear faster or letting off the clutch slower, i do it also some times when shifting quickly or carelessly

It is a small reservoir down and to the right from the reservoir for the brake fluid. It also uses at least DOT 3 brake fluid as well.

I get the impression Nissan 5-Spds are kinda troublesome. I've noticed a lot of people complaining of having bearing problems with them. An Altima I had was sold because I didn't want to replace the bearings when they started to go.

I had this problem in our '99 Jetta VR6, and VW later fessed up to a bad synchro problem. I've had 3 Maximas in 5 spd, but have never had this problem.

When I was complaining to the VW service mgr, I told him it should shift like a Maxima, (or at least a passat), to which they said "your transmission is normal, don't shift at rpm's so high"

Our first (and last) VW was traded for another Nissan (#6 since 1995) approx 6 wks later.

well my brother had this problem on his 94 sentra 5 speed bnecause he got his car with 57L miles and tranny fluid was still original, it was the second gear synchro that was failing, but since we put in the redline mt90 no 2nd gear probs
maybe u should adjust you clutch

Accord 4-banger 5spd drivers have a similar problem. The problem is that the sycnhronizers aren't fast enough to handle ultra-fast gear changes like that. The solution is to just slow down your shifting a bit. The problem seems to be a little bit worse for Accord drivers though because darn near every one of them has complained about grinding at one point or another. The Max 5spd seems better just from browsing here, but still not able to handle the ultra fast shifts maybe...

Just food for thought
