Serious Issue! 2 Lug Nut Threads SNAPPED OFF!!

Havent been on this site in a hot minute. So heres a little breakdown. I've got a 4th Gen GLE, a few months ago I changed all my brake pads on my maxima and I realized that one of my lug nut threads broke off.. I thought nothing of it and changed all the lug nuts. I've been hearing a weird noise in my right front tire and today I just checked my tires and I have 3 LUG NUTS LEFT!! This is serious If I lose one more then my tire will come flying off while Im driving.. I do not want this to happen!!

Please someone tell me what can be causing this? I have never heard of a problem like this before, I tried searching for it and could not find anything related. And to clarify again, THE THREADS broke off not just the Nuts but the threads completely and Now there are 3 left!! Please Any Help Is Appreciated!

Ok I found out from a friend that Im going to need to change the studs and apparently it will only cost me about $5 for the 2 studs. But I also want to fix the problem, does anyone have an idea what can be the problem?

where are you located? sometimes i would think rust would cause that...

I had two lugs break on my car about 8 months ago but that was because i stripped them on accident with an air ratchet...just get new lug studs...they will run you maybe $10 a wheel and replace them all.

then report back...it shouldnt take you longer than 30 minutes per wheel.

Did you use a torque wrench when you put the wheels back on after the brake job?

You probably over torqued the nuts.

I have had a couple of them break before. One was an air gun at a tire store (they replaced the stud for free, I just happened to see it). The other, the stud threads were pretty worn from me taking the wheels on and off a lot. It got cross threaded and I broke it semi-intentionally.

^^^ if one or two were over-torqued, and broke off, the other three can easily be affected, causing a cascadeing failure, due to excessive stress.

The reason the others are breaking off now is because of the added stress. you lose one, you can drive cautiously, you lose two, park the car immediately. As stated, if you're replacing studs, replace everything on that hub, since chances are that the remaining two are stressed beyond tolerance and ready to go.

Alrighty, I finally did it. After looking at some pictures online I changed all the studs and bolts. I also changed the rotor thinking that would fix my problem but. No luck.. It still makes the weird clicking/squeaking noise. My only guess now is that the rim is bent. My roomate checked it and told me it was bent.

Any one know about how much it will run me to get the rim repaired? Its stock. And also where I should go? I went to tires plus last year to get all my tires changed and get a tranny flush and it came out to like $600 or something which was pretty good. Im thinking about going back to them.

bent rim shouldn't squeak/click.
sounds like a the wheel bearing is going out, or the cv axle.

Thanks ben, I will go rotate my tires now to see if it still makes the sound on the side. If so then its definitely not the rim.

Ok Im back with some interesting news. I rotated all the tires and then jacked up the front end and ran the car and I didn't hear anything abnormal, I wasn't sure if it wasn't making a sound because it was jacked and there was no pressure on the wheels so, I put it back down and drove it around.

During the test drive I found that the front right tire was no longer making any weird loud noises anymore. BUT!!! The back end is now making the noises. So could it really be the rim that is causing this problem?

Please someone respond tomorrow is my last day off that I'll be able to get this fixed.

And also for the other questions above. I don't have a torque wrench on hand, everything was tightened with man-strength.

So to sum it up in one post.

A loud clicking/squeaking (I can't quite describe it 100%) noise has been coming from my front right tire. What ever is making this noise caused 3 of my studs to snap off. After I changed all the studs and changed the rotor. The noise still existed. I then rotated the front tires to the back and now the noise is gone from the front. But now I hear a similar noise in the rear of the car.

ok, so if the sound followed the wheel... id check the wheel... and better yet... just toss on ur spare! if the sounds still there... then its not the wheel...

other thoughts, bearing or suspension?

If it followed the wheel/tire then logic says it is the issue....

Take the wheel/tire into a reputable wheel shop and have them check it. They can tell if there are issues with the wheel and/or tire.

If the rim is bent expect to pay anywhere from $50 to $100 to fix, maybe more. Usually you can bargain on the price, especially when paying cash.

I was thinking about putting on the spare but the spare didn't come with a tire mounted on it.
