Those with Passport 8500 - Tip

For those of you with the passport 8500, I have a recommended tip. Use the passport in Expert mode, where it can show all the different band radar signals and how many different signals there are.

I just started using the expert mode about a month ago. On my way to work there is an electronic road signal that emitts a K band signal, so when I hear the 8500 signal I just ignore it.

Well, yesterday I was driving and I get a K band signal, I look at my detector and I notice there are two different Kband signals. So I start to slow down, as I pass the big road sign I see a state trooper sitting right behind the road sign - WOW!!!

I got lucky, cause I'm so used to my 8500 going off there that I don't slow down, luckily I did this time. If I didn't have the expert mode on, I would have just seen that there was a Kband signal, and I wouldn't have noticed that there were two of them.

So those with the Passport 8500, I would definately use the advanced mode or else what's the point?

That is great news! I will have to switch mine into expert mode today. I've been using my 8500 for about 6 months and I think it's about time I progressed.

Yeah, I use Expert Mode for that exact same reason. In my area, there are a lot of fixed signals and it is easy to tell on the Expert mode if there is an extra one, ie. po po.

Despite the talk about V1, I have been quite happy with 8500. It has yet to let me down and on several occasions has saved me.

I turned mine to Expert mode the day I got it It's definitely the most useful of the modes. I usually just pay attention to what Band goes off, but here's a way to mimic the V1 arrows if you really care: Put your hand over the radar and the signal will drop dramatically if the radar is in fact coming from the front. If it's coming from the rear the signal will stay the same. Get the most out of your detector without paying for the $100 arrows I live in Texas so I also turn my Xband off while leaving the detector in Highway mode at all times.
