hehe... I just took my 18" chrome revo's off for the winter (******* snow) and put back my pos silver 15" enkei's. Seriously, I feel like a lesser man. The car looks like ***. It is faster however!

Anyway, the point of this post. Am I crazy for wanting to spraypaint my 15's rims black? I know if I really wanted it done right I should have them powdercoated but I don't feel like spending that money on winter rims. The rims are in some cruddy shape and I think I'd like to spray them with a dozen coats of gloss black just to do something a little different. Someone give me some opinions here? Would the paint hold up at all?

Am I nuts? Maybe it's time to go to sleep. =)

 

There is some special paint thats made for painting rims. Let me find the name of that stuff for you.

 

Don't do it unless you really prep them well. I mean take a few hours of sanding on each rim. Then use automotive paint not spray paint.

If you don't, it will look like absolute crap after is starts chipping/flaking away.

Yeah, you have to sand the original finish off of the wheels before you paint. Otherwise, the new paint won't stick.

Yep, at the last local meet a guy painted his Enkeis (can't remember if it was clear coat or black colour) and it was flaking off.

I think surface prep is key (make sure the surface is dust-free, clean, and ROUGH) and maybe check into paint incompatabilities too.

I used the Dupli-Color white paint on my 92SE's rims. I sanded off the clearcoat (not perfectly), then proceeded to wash the rims. I then applied two coats of white primer (not sure of the brand, it was regular primer), and then applied 4 coats of the Dupli-Color and let it set for 24 hours. The rims came out wonderful -- the 4 coats were nice and thick and made the rims look like they were powdercoated (almost). For the $10 in paint it cost me, I was very impressed.

 

I'll save you the trouble

How to Paint your rims Black,or any color
Materials Needed
4-6 cans of Rustolem Black Night Metallic Paint
1-2 cans of Rustolem White Primer
1 can of Rustolem or other brand clear coat
1 large roll of masking tape
1 8 sheet package of fine grit sandpaper
1 Jack and 2 Jackstands


1.Remove wheels from car it is easier to do 2 at a time so jackstands will be needed.
2.Wash them with some water and soap until all dirt is gone, then dry completely
3.Use a fine sandpaper and sand down all surfaces to be painted. You need to get rid of the clear coat. If silver they should become a powdery looking silver/whitish color.
4.Mask of the tire and all places that you do not want painted.
5.Use a White primer, it makes it easier to see where you have already painted. Apply 2-3 coats and let dry completely between coats.
6.Apply 4+ coats of paint making sure to use light layers at first and then build up to the full coats for an even finish for the last couple coats. Make sure to let them dry thourghly between coats.
7.After the paint is dry apply 2 coats of clear coat for extra protection.
8.Allow to dry for about 30-45 mins before re-applying to the car.
9.Repeat for the other three wheels.
9.You are all done, great job.

 

Spray two different colors in a checker pattern so they look CF....
