Nick, welcome to the world of the Max. I just bought a '04 in October of last year, and love it. Many people shy away from the '04 w/ the 5 speed auto as I have, but I switched the tranny fluid over to Amsoil, so hope I don't have any issues. The 3.5 is an incredible engine, and I put a Flowmaster cat back, so have released the incredible sound it can make. One thing I noticed was the road noise it had, so I Dynomatted the whole interior...that helped a lot. I have been following this site for a few months now, and have gotten a lot of tips on this and that. Good luck from an Oregon Max owner.

Where in Maine you from? Theres only a couple guys on here from Maine...me, JSutter and Dominicanaso are the only ones I know of that are active right now.

I myself have a 4th gen 97 and am very happy with it and a lot of guys will probably concur 4th or 5th gens are the ones to go with if you are into modding etc. Welcome to the .ORG...word of advise, make sure you search before you post new threads or be prepared for the wrath There are stickies which inclue "how to's" for each Gen Max, make sure to read them for A LOT of info. Here, I'll get you started for the 4th and 5th Gen How to sections.

Welcome to the org! Like the others have said, there is a whole lot of information on here, and there's almost no question that can't be answered.

I myself have a 2002, and a 1995. I love them both, but if speed/performance is what you're after, then you're probably better with a 2002-2003. Plus they're easier to find in decent condition....at least here in Toronto anyway.

Obviously the older the car the more maintenance work will be needed; but if you like getting grimy and changing all your little maintenance parts then the 4th gen is a perfect car. 95-99. But it is not a car that can be neglected.

Welcome! Been here almost 12 years myself. I've owned 2nd, 3rd (VG), 3rd (VE), 4th, and a 2001 I30. I currently own a turboed 3rd gen VG and a 5.5 gen ('03).
Of all those, I've enjoyed my '03 the most. Has a lot of nice features out of the box and currently has a quite a bit of aftermarket support (ie: headers, y, 3" catback, 5 peice intake spacer kit, bias delete kit, motor mount inserts, springs or coilovers, cams, shift kit if auto tranny, and even haltech engine management). Just a lot of great stuff.
For me, until Nissan gets their thumbs out of their butts, my 5.5 will be the newest gen Max I will own.

There's my input. 5.5 or I35.

looks like spring time before i get my max. preformance wise not looking to go crazy just a nice daily driver that I can have fun with. i'm become rather obsessed with finding a black on black or gray on black 2003 model.
basicly what i see for mine is
lowered (nothing crazy)
wheels and tires
stillen lip
the 2000 black tails
smoked side markers
exhaust
upgraded brakes
upgraded swaybars
valve body upgrade
Yellow fogs (yes i know its played out)
tinted windows
and Ipod intergration
basicly a respectfull daily

It is spring...in 2 months summer...

you want an 02 or 03 6mt...Autos kinda blow and are slow. Ask me how I know.

come hang out in the regional forum. you just can't trust the general forum now a days.

and yes yellow fogs are played out.

02-03 6mt would be my choice if you can find one in the right condition/mileage. I looked for months and couldn't find one. had to settle for an 04. still love it though.

you can always buy a 6 speed swap like me but it is a more expensive way to go as no one auto swaps really.
