Those are very impressive numbers... if the 4th gen makes usable power like that I may go back on my "never buy an intake" policy.

For the last month and half I have gotten tongue lashings from numerous Max owners on this site that SWORE the 2002 Max made more power than the 2002 Altima. It was so painfully obvious that the Altima is making the same power since Nissan rated the Altima with the same peak torque and at the same rpm as the Maxima. With these results, I think it is very clear that Nissan has either underrated the Altima or overrated the Maxima. The ECUs are the same, the power is the same, weight is the same, therefore performance will be the same......just like I've been saying for a while now. Hopefully this will put the Max vs Altima performance debate to rest.

Dave
I'm failing to see how this is any vindication for you Dave B. They do not have the same power or torque at the crank. This only further proves it.

We have a Dyno of ehughes's Auto 02 Max at 197.4HP and 218.9ft-lbs. Stock, except for a Stillen intake. 25% tranny for the auto and we have... 263HP and 292ft-lb of torque.

We have a Dyno of Polished2002's 5speed 02 Altima at 199.6HP and 218.5ft-lbs of torque. It is completely stock. 15% tranny loss for the manual and we have... 235HP and 257ft-lb of torque.

We have DMBmaxima88's stock 6speed Max at 204.1HP and 226.5ft-lb of torque.

You interpret the results this way. You figure that there is a 15% loss in the 6 speed tranny which means the 02 Max has... 240HP and 266.5ft-lb of torque. The problem with your interpretation is that is seems impossible to believe that ehughes's Stillen intake added 23HP and 25ft-lb of torque.

My interpretation is this. The engine puts out about 255HP and the tranny has a 19-20% loss (just like the 6 speed in the SE-R Spec-V). This gives us 255HP and 283ft-lb of torque for the engine. This means that ehughes's Stillen intake is adding 8HP and about 10ft-lb of torque.

Now you tell me which seems more reasonable?

Case 1:
A Stillen intake adds 23HP and 25ft-lbs of torque to an 02 Auto Maxima.
Nissan lied about the Maxima having 255HP when it really only has 240HP. This puts Nissan in very hot water for false advertising.
They have different intakes, exhausts, and the Max has a higher compression ratio. Despite all this both the Altima and the Maxima only have 240HP.

Case 2:
Nissan didn't lie about either car. The Max has 255HP and the Altima has 240HP.
The 6 speed tranny has a slightly higher loss than the 5 speed.
A Stillen intake adds 8HP and about 10ft-lb of torque.

You mean to tell me the fuel cutoff in DMB's car occurs at 6400 RPM? The drop in the dyno (VTC or exhaust or whatever it is) seems to occur at 3850RPM. That's 75RPM earlier than the Polished2002's Altima changed. Something seems a little goofy.

Hey dmbmaxima88 or MattC:

Did you guys cut the run at 6400 rpm or did the rev limiter kick in? The reason I'm asking is that I still find the plots to be off by 100-200 rpms. The torque peaks below 4400 and the HP peaks at almost 5350 in the stock setup. The modded setup peaks a bit higher as expected, but still not at the rpms that you would expect from Nissan's claims.

Now I see why some people are running under 14.5s stock - very nice! Thanks for the posts.

FYI - Regarding my thread on my 2k2 dyno results (auto, stillen intake). My peak TQ was at 4,700 RPM and HP at 5300 RPM. Also, my TQ did not fall below 200 until 5200 RPM and HP stayed above 190 from 4700 to 5700 rpm. Where is that d@mn scanner! It was 57.5 degrees at the intake and typical Houston damp. Also, we dialed the dyno to stop at 6,500 rpm, but the rev limit or speed limiter kicked in.

No way 25%

Unless its AWD equiped?

More like 20%

If DMB's 2k2 6spd is loosing 20% he's got a problem! It is more like 15% and Nissan over estimated the horse power or the production version of the VQ35 is not the exact same motor as the prototype.

Ford had the same problem on one year of the newer Cobras. An intake manifold was the problem.

Who knows what the 2k2's problem is...

Still a nice ride though, I would trade up if i had the $$$$$!

Altima vs maxima dyno

I photochopped (very poorly I might add, damn PAINT) the 2k2 max vs the 2k2 altima dyno http://i1a.yimg.com/1a/cd0968e2/g/76962255.jpg. As you can clearly see the maxima has about 10-15hp more than the altima from 3000-5250rpm. After that the altima has around 6-10hp over the maxima. I even put both torque curves into the same car in cartest. It shows that the max torque curve drops 0-60 1 tenth and adds 1mph trapspeed.

All autos are about 25%. Where have you been? That is standard fare for a auto. AWD is a lot more than 25%. The 5th gen auto loses about 25%. Are you living in denial or something?

i didn't cut off the runs at 6400rpms i ran them to like 6600rpms. i think the machine might ahve been off ~200rpms. i started low and ran it to the redline for a reason. to see low end torque and where the power stops. i don't know what happened but i held it.

So that means the car has more HP than the graph and the numbers show.

The dyno machine is correct because it is directly getting the rpm from the coil. Its just that your tach is off by 200-300rpm. I think the cars hit fuel cut around 6600-6700rpm, so the tach will read in the 6900-7100rpm range.

so next time i will run it to like 6900rpms then.

and DAVEB, the altimas might make 4 less hp. but they make over 10less ft/lbs of torque. that's significant in my book.

Run it until you hit the fuel cut. And as I detailed a few pages back there is a significant difference. An Auto 2k2 has 255HP at the crank. I highly doubt that the 6 speed has less power than the auto.

That 10tq difference is simular to a 4th gen with and without a Y pipe. I wonder if the difference is in the exhaust or fuel/timing curves hmmmm.
