ATTN Matt (MardiGrasMax), or others.....How hard to pull the engine?

Hey guys,

I have come to the conclusion that I am going to pull the engine and my fioncee's father and I are going to rebuild it. I will send out the parts to the respective places to get all that done... Matt, I know you did it, and you and Del know each other pretty well, so I trust your info.

Thanks guys,
Mike

What exactly are you going to do to it? Custom cams, pistons, stuff like that??? Let us know how it goes.

I would buy a factory service manual, it would probably help a lot. I was looking over the procedure for removing the engine the other day, and the engine comes out under the car instead of pulling out from the top, which would make it more difficult for someone who doesnt have access to a garage or hydrolic lift. By the time your done you should know more about the VQ than most. Good luck

Yea, I would definitely purchase a Factory Service Manual before I started the project. I think it can be pulled from the top too though. I dont have access to a lift where my car is now.....

Give your self ~20hrs out, and 20hrs in. If you got air tools and can work in large time blocks it should be a little less.

Four jack stands are nice to have. The extra two will be used to support the motor from underneath when you drop the trans. Use a 4x4x6 block of wood between the oil pan and the jack stand to protect the oil pan. A jack with at least 24" reach is good.

Drain all the fluids first. Radiator, Trans, Engine, PS, AC.

The wire harness is easy cause it comes off and goes on only one way.

Pull the radiator with the fans attached. I put a small piece of ply wood in front of the AC condensor to protect it.

Jack the car as high as you can.

Remove cross member.

Remove Y pipe.

Pull the axles.

Trans comes out from under with a jack.

Engine comes out from above with a shop crane (engine lift).

FSM is a must.

I will PM you my tel#.

Turbo and five of his friends, I'm sure. He's got MUCHO GRANDE tools!

Me, I have mostly hand tools, I can borrow a little compressor some times. I did most of the disassembly my self. I had help for the "actual" removal and installation of the trans and engine. But I am mostly a lone ranger. And I worked week nights after work too.

If you start at day break, have good tools and air, and a full time capable DIY'r helping you, you will have it done before sunset!
