whoa, i didnt think anyone else actually thought about this stuff on this board..did you watch f&f lately? (j/k no offense, really)

well, let me tell you something first off, unless you live in some SMALL town with around 2 sherrifs and a deputy on patrol.. you WILL need whats called a "TrunkingTracking" scanner.

Trunking is basically the process by which radio transmissions jump frequencies in order to free up space for the next transmission (basic terms).

In most major cities, every authority (police, fire, ems) uses trunking systems (Motorolla/EDACS/etc) so you WILL need a trunking scanner (they cost more, but thats the only way you can truly listen to police transmissions).

You should try the Uniden Bearcat BC780XLT, its a big scanner to fit in your car, but it has the latest TrunkTracking technology and its a great base scanner. If you want a smaller scanner your choices are basically limited (the Uniden Bearcat 245XLT is a handheld scanner but has the same TrunkTracking technology).

There arent very many scanners that have the TrunkTracking technology, you are basically limited to HandHeld ones and Base (desktop) ones. Since you want a small one, youre probably thinking of a transceiver (radio transmitter), they are small and are made to be put in cars but are not what you want (hope that doesnt cofuse you).

Try looking on ebay for trunking scanners, used scanners are usually cheap and in good condition (radio buffs dont abuse their stuff because of their expensive prices, trust me).

hope that helps...somehow, ask any more questions if you want!

Go down to radio shack and have a look there. Expect to spend around $200-300 for a good one, and get a good external antenna. They have sales on them from time to time as well.

Check your state laws man, so alow them and some don't. I know Virginia doesn't but my home town Atl. does. Cobra is the best! Expect to pay a pretty penny though i.e. $200-400. And only have it in your car when you are racing, speeding, or doing something illegal etc. Cops don't particularly like it if you get caught with one illegally though.

So what if you can monitor the police. Don't you have to know all the numeric codes to understand anything?

forget scanners. radar detectors are illegal in virginia too. when i was driving down to florida last spring, the SECOND thing u see after goin into the state, after the welcome to virginia sign is, RADAR DETECTORS are illegal in the state of VA.

So you can tell where they are, and then come here and complain when you get a ticket for driving too fast and getting your scanner confiscated....

He doesn't fix it for you because you can fix it yourself.
