rusting away

rusting away

My car is garaged for the last 12 years. It doesn't see much water b/c I take the train to work but it is just rusting away. I know this is a common issue on this car but wtf. I would like to just slow it down, will rusty primer or por 15 help or am I wasting my time? I was going to deal w/ it next year b/c I want to finish my Trans am first lol. Brian.

Mine just had rust break through within the past week. The salty air and roads did it in this year.....

Yup, I certainly want to take care of it but I imagine it will be close to $1000 for the chemo therapy for it. So if any one has some ways to slow it down that would be fantabulous!

I am in NYC so everything is a fortune. My friend ownes a big shop. I like my max but the t/a is first.

Thats going to suck. Mine is Sterling Silver... I have the KT3 spray cans for touch ups and stuff but I just dont want it looking like more of a shyt box afterwards ya know.

If you're getting rust that bad, you need to check your lower radiator core support where the crossmember that holds the motor mounts bolts up to. They rust from the inside out, so if you see rust bubbling up on it, it's gone. It will break loose from you. It's a structural part of the car and it holds up alot of weight from the engine and transmission. I'd fix that first if it needs it before the rear quarter panels.

Yeah that kinda seems like a more serious issue doesn't it.... next time I'm under need it for oil change I was checking things out.

Good idea, it gets inspected in June soI will have them throw it on a lift.

If its bad it likely wont pass inspection because of this. Fix it before inspection.

You don't need a lift to inspect it. You can look at it through the lower air intake in the bumper, and look underneath it and behind it easily with a flashlight. Take a screwdriver or a small little hammer and tap around on it to hear if it's solid. The typical area to rust first is at and on both sides of where the crossmember bolts up to.

My friend's car had large deposits of rust on the driver side A-pillar (he could not find the cause though). A good rubdown and filling in ensured a smooth surface for the primer and then paint. Did work wonders and the rust has not returned there since. It was done nearly a year ago.

It's a design flaw of the government which contaminates the roads you drive your car on.

What do they use on the roads there, sand? The original owner of my car lived in NYC for a few years before moving back here and selling the car. It got it's fair share of rust damage. All the local Maxima's here that haven't been up north are in much better shape than mine.

It is salt that eats thru everything. You guys have paint and interior fade. Lol. My car has been garaget for the 8years i have owned it.
