Have you driven both an Explorer and an Xterra? I have, and as bad as Ford is for recalls, the Explorer is a pretty good SUV. It handles pretty well, accelerates smoothly (quicker than the supercharged Xterra), and has good interior space. In contrast, when I drove the Xterra through the fast track at Edmunds Live, it felt slow, the seats were too thin, and the interior was so cheap. It handled okay (not as good as the larger explorer) and was good on the offroad segment. This is just my view based on personal experience. I think if you have a family to drive around, the Explorer is pretty good (it has a better backseat than the cramped backseat of a Pathfinder) compared to the Xterra, which seems to me to be a single guy's offroad truck rather than an everyday SUV.
Actually if it were my money, I would buy a Highlander over either the Explorer or Xterra (or Pathfinder).

The XTerra has a cool commercial where the guy gets a bandaid to tape up his bike seat. I don't see that in the Explorer commercial. Cool commercials sell vehicles, which Ford isn't doing judging by the plant closings. The fact that they can't close the plants as early as needed because of UAW contracts is going to send the company down the tubes. The stock is less than 1/2 of what it was a year ago....way to go! That's what happens when you don't offer a fuel-efficient and powerful V8.

I have a 02' Explorer and I thinks its great. 215hp 240lbs of torque and a 5 speed auto. And if given the chance I will hand an Xt its own A$$. Where have you been?? "Ride on Nissan's back"? The explorer has been one of the best selling Sport Ut's around for like 10 years!!!

Ford's goin down the tubes thanks to Firestone, and thanks to Explorer drivers who figure the "sports" in "sports utility" means being able to corner around turns like you can with a sedan, without rolling over.
