This is What Happens...Split CV Boot

Think that split CV boot isn't a big deal?

Well basically I've been driving around with a split boot for about a month. Hit a pothole while turning, and going less than 5 mph. The broken ring obviously is from hitting the pothole. But, imho that ring would have never broke if all that dirt/grim didn't wear the cv joint like that.

If you never changed the axle out, you have to factor in the age of the part too. 1995-2013 that's pretty old and pretty good if you ask me.

must have been a lot longer than a month to cause that much heat damage unless you drive a lot of miles each day.

Yea, I'd say that would've had to have a broken boot for A LOT longer than a month to cause that. I had a broken boot on my lowered 5.5 for almost a whole year, and I just recently changed/re-greased them. I had no damage inside.

Sorry, didn't mean the boot. I meant that clicking you get from the cv joint. Not sure how long the boot has been split. And, I drive at least 60 miles everyday.

Thought axle's were rated for the life of the engine.

Diagnosing the clicking

I joined Maxima.org last night trying to diagnose this. "Clicking" really is the appropriate description. I already guessed CV joint after a discussion with my mechanic buddy, but he described it as humming or grinding. It only hums at higher speeds, and I'd be more wary of driving it if I heard anything grinding.

It started 3 days ago. I drive about the same or a little less, so it's good to see what 1 month did to it. Was the clicking louder and deeper when in reverse for you too? Getting it worked on this weekend, so I'll find out soon enough what the damage is.
