Oil Pressure Warning Light Help!!

When starting the car after not driving for several hours or overnight the oil pressure light stays on for about a minute and before it turns off it blinks and then it turns off. If I start the car after driving it for a while the light does not stay on at all. What could be wrong?

Check the oil pressure sending unit which is behind the oil pan. These have a notorious problem of leaking and failing. Go to the 4 gen FAQs for more info.

Might be an oil leak. I had this problem before.

Bad oil filter

Oil filters have an aiti-drain back valve in them. If it's gone bad then as your car sits over night all the oil in the oil passages drains back into the pan. When you start your car in the morning it's starving for oil. Try a different oil filter and definately check the oil pressure sending unit as they are prone to failure.

Got an oil change last week with Nissan filter. Light still stays on. How do I check the oil pressure sending unit?

You don't even need to bother checking it. It is a $10 part. Just replace it.

To replace the oil pressure sending unit, remove passenger front wheel, and remove the plastic splash shield. The oil filter is right there, and the sending unit is behind that (you will see the connector and wiring harness). I'm not sure you need to drain the oil before removing the sensor, but it can't hurt, since you are under the car anyways. Anyways, unscrew the sensor, replace, replug, and refill the oil. Then you are good to go!

I have the diagnositic for the oil pressure sending unit in the FSM. If you send me an email, I will send you the procedure when I get home from work.
