Dude laughed at me!

On the way home from work today I stopped by college park auto parts and decided to pick up some brake fluid. I asked the zz top look alike store owner if he carried the Motul Brand and said that he had this other DOT 5 high performance fade free stuff. He then proceded to ask me what car this was going into and I told him a NISSAN MAXIMA! And he was like you don't need this stuff and then proceded to show me some pos castro brand and said that this would be able to handle whatever the maxima could dish out. He then proceded back to his counter. Already peeved (i shoulda just left), I went up to the counter to purchase the DOT 5 stuff and then he began to give me this sarcastic laugh because I decided to go against his suggestion. Anyways needless to say I was pretty annoyed that the maxima got dissed once again by this redneck.

Ok thought i'd share my experience. That's all. Thanks for listening.

He's probably right. If he showed your the castrol dot 4 that is.

Castro makes a decent brand of brake fluid.

What type of DOT 5? Some of the DOT 5's will suck up water very quickly and cause problems for long term street use.

Thats the best part about having a Maxima. People think of it as a family sedan until they drive it or see its rear end at a stoplight.

I love Castrol!!!! Grew up with it

I use Castrol for everything, guess brand image plays an important part in decisions. I'll even choose Castrol Syntec over Mobil1 (ooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhh, **** ... gonna get flamed for this!).

My 0.02 .. Castrol is a good brand. Relevance to this thread = 0%. =)

Uhhhh, I'd highly suggest you stick your pride back in your pocket and take the DOT 5 back to the store and get the DOT 4. DOT 5 is NOT compatible with DOT 3 or DOT 4 fluid. it's like oil in water. It'll do nasty stuff to your brake system too, as it doesn't mix with water and any H2o that gets in your system will "puddle" in the low spots on your lines and cause them to corrode.

blah blah blah DO NOT put DOT 5 fluid in your car, unless it specifically asks for it. The guy behind the counter DID know what he was talking about.

another FYI.. I've got bigger brakes than 90% of the members here, and I have yet to get to the limits of good DOT 3 fluid. (ATE blue/yellow to be exact.) I've smoked countless sets of pads- 5 sets since August- and even have pics of my rotors glowing red.... The fluid never went south on me.

Why anyone would need better fluid than that, I dunno.

I was about to say the same thing, I laughed at this thread and wondered why no one had picked up on this. Like the man above me said, DOT 5 is not compatible with DOT 4 and DOT 3 systems and you will ruin your brakes if you put it in there... Might wanna listen to the ZZ Top lookin guy next time. If you want some good fluid go get some Ford HD fluid from a ford dealership, its DOT $ but has a dry boiling point about 100 degrees higher than most DOT 4 fluid. Wet boiling point is about the same as any other DOT 4.

Why would anyone want to use Dot 5? I say, go get Castrol Dot 3 and stick with it. Listen to the guys on the .org ... thanks to their screw-ups, we are better educated!

And I shall share every screw-up with the .org too, so we're all cool. Right? Right? RIGHT?

P.S: Castrol gives you strong teeth! Use only DOT 3 as recommended.
