Carbon Fiber wrapped roof... Easy to do yourself!
Carbon Fiber wrapped roof... Easy to do yourself!
So I found a guy locally who had 3M quality carbon fiber vinyl at a ridiculous price... $.20 per square foot.
I have done some wrapping before, but never worked with the heavier vinyl. Took about 2 hours to do, but in the end I am very pleased with it. I had tried plasti-dipping the roof, but this was a much better finish.
For anyone who is interested in doing this,it is REALLY not complicated. I had called a couple local shops and was quoted prices from $250 to $380 to have the roof done with the exact same vinyl.
The important steps are:
1. Have someone to help you.
2. DO NOT do it as we started and do it in halves. Lay the entire piece out at one time and work from one side to the other.
3. Use fairly heavy pressure when stretching it. Use a heat gun on low heat.
4. When you get to the edges where you will be tucking the vinyl under the rubber trim, tuck it down with the excess and then cut it while behind the rubber trim. That way you are insured to get complete coverage.
5. You WILL get bubbles that show up when its been in the sun. Use a needle to pop the bubbles.
6. Take your time...
7. Did I mention having someone to help you was important?

Agreed... was not actually aware that it is possible to "wrap" a flat surface with carbon fiber cloth. I see now that it IS possible although I cant fathom why one would go to the expense or effort.
With the dark tint on my windows and the black sunroof I felt that the silver roof looked odd. Now there is one continuous panel of blackness from the hood to the trunk.
I will refrain from commenting on why some .org members pour thousands of dollars in to a vehicle that was created for business executives and low budget trophy wives... and would hope that the purpose of my post was understood by at least SOME of the membership.
The purpose of my post was not to please the above mentioned .org members. It was to let members who may be compelled to change the color or texture of their roof know that it is not necessary to pay some shop up to $400 to do it.

Anyway, you should peel that junk off and let the stock paint shine.

My intention was to find out whether or not you're the T. Horvath I went to school with. But you had to get personal about it. Nice rice mod. Seriously, you did a decent job, but it's tacky. Nissan doesn't skimp on paint, it'll last for decades. I don't see much reason for this.
I attended St. Pauls Catholic school in Joliet, Il and graduated 8th grade in 1985. The common usage of the term "rice" or "ricey" would mean basically ANYTHING that does not actively improve performance. So, yes I would agree this may be categorized as "ricey".
In the last eight years I have had 4 NEW Nissans (Frontier, Titan, Armada and X-Terra). I understand that the paint is of a high quality... As I said, my reason for wanting SOMETHING on the roof is that the contrast of the black and silver on the roof looked strange to me.
Further, if anyone wants some of this vinyl I can put you in contact with the person who is selling it (I have no interest in the actual sale) and he is willing to ship for actual shipping costs.
After seeing your edited post, I think you have no right to suggest I do anything to my vehicle. I though I have no right to make suggestions to you, I will suggest that you BITE ME! Tomorrow I will be wrapping the roof on my co-workers 950hp GTR... Tell him its ricey!!!

Its the internet, dude. If you put something out there you will get positive and negative responses. Don't expect everyone to like everything you do. And definitely do not get super defensive, that's just asking for people to mess with you.
I understand everyone has different tastes. Thats why God made blondes, brunettes and red heads!
You did a great job! It looks really good from what I can tell in the pictures.
Ignore the haters, I think it looks fine. Its not like you put on a giant hello kitty sticker or something.
