Brand of Crank Position Sensor VG30E
I need to replace CPS in my 87, so I am looking for input from those of you with experience with replacing this part - good or bad. This CPS is an optical type in the distributor for VG30E, which I think was used until '94 GXE.
Another question is if the distributor needs to be removed, as shown in the directions of both Airtex and BWD/Standard. Offhand, I don't see why since the parts are removed from the top. It's no big deal to remove it, it just seems easier to hold the bottom shaft still while the top shaft screw is loosened.

I replaced the CPS and it's fixed. It runs a bit better too, so it must have been a partial failure until it finally died.
I did the R&R in-vehicle without removing the distributor. This way the shaft and distributor was locked in position and made it easier to remove.
I went with a BWD/Standard sensor. A lot of look-a-like sensors out there being made in China. But with electronics -engine management you really can't tell what you have. Time will tell.
