Those of you knowledgable on upholstery...

I will be attempting a challenging project...replacing my cloth door panel inserts with leather on my 92. I can get hold of sheets of leather from leatherseats.com or theres an upholstery shop nearby. Now I havent taken apart my door panels yet but I will be soon when I put in my new Pioneer stereo . But as i see from the inside of the car it looks as if the cloth insert is attatched to some type of thin padding then mounted onto another piece then that piece is mounted on the door panel (correct me if im wrong...) Anyone up on upholstery or have any general tips/tricks/advice on something like this? This is what I hope for it to turn out like, with the "ripple" effect in the leather -

(scroll to the 8TH pic down and look at the door panels)

i took off my door panels to replace the speakers on my 4th gen, and i didnt see any mounting hardware for the cloth panel. I think they are glued to the door panels, but i could be wrong. If you get them out, the leather should not be hard to replace, just use short staples at the top, pull tight and continue stapling around. you will have to cut some slits in some areas to keep it from bunching up.

wont the staples puncture through the panel? (like puncture through the leather hence sticking out and being visible from inside the car)

"short staples" make sure that you buy staples that are short enough so that they don't puncture thru

I have no clue how they did it, but when Classic Soft Trim replaced my cloth, they also replaced the door inserts with matching leather.

Check them out....

I got a couple of pics ... Check my homepage link.

today i finally got around to taking apart the door panels and the inserts look like a beotch to take off and replace with leather. Turns out that the cloth inserts are glued onto some thin type of yellow foam padding then glued DIRECTLY onto the panel (i was hoping it be attatched to a seperate piece then that seperate piece be attatched to the whole panel) However it was glued on at the factory used some really tough glue b/c that cloth is really welded on there...so now i get to have some fun with this...

Can you just glue the leather ON TOP of the cloth? If it isn't that thick, it may work just fine.
