Nissan Airbag Recall. Be safe
Supposedly those in very humid areas are at greater risk
01-03 Maximas and Infiniti I30/5 are some of the models being recalled
Wonder how many people this issue has killed compared to the GM fiasco ...

These problematic airbags are made in Japan by a company that makes them for most major car manufacturers, so the recall list is long.
Most manufacturers are only recalling cars that are in hot, sticky climates, especially those near the ocean or gulf, as salty air seems to make the problem worse. Florida, Puerto Rico and southeast Texas are the only areas where ALL manufacturers using these flawed airbags are recalling cars. A few manufacturers are recalling from the entire southeast part of the country.
As for deaths, first word was that there were no confirmed deaths. That may prove to be incorrect.
As for comparison with the GM problem, GM has recalled 29 MILLION vehicles so far THIS YEAR ALONE. And there are more yet to come, as the same faulty design ignition switch was being installed in 1997 GM vehicles back as early as late summer of 1996.
Many accident deaths in GM vehicles over the last seventeen years that were originally classified as driver error are now, upon further investigation, being reclassified as due to equipment failure. Legal analysists are estimating that the actual death toll from the faulty ignition switch alone is probably between 300 and 500.
Several of those deaths were here in the Atlanta area. That makes sense, as any deviation whatsoever from your lane in Atlanta's packed, insane traffic is an automatic accident.
When this ignition switch fails, the car loses power steering, and most drivers are totally incapable of safely steering today's vehicles without power steering. Worse, the car loses its power brakes, and anyone here who has had to stop any modern vehicle without power brakes knows that sometimes we can press so hard we break the brake pedal bracket, and still the car rolls on.
I have friends who are driving these vehicles that are under recall, but who know nothing about the recall, and have not yet been notified by GM. When they approach their dealer, the answer is invariably that the replacement parts are not yet available. In most cases, there would be no way the dealer could repair the recalled cars in his area within the next several years, because there are just too many of them.
