Replacing the sagging wooden floor panel in our trunk ..?
I'm thinking of getting a sturdier panel from Home Depot and borrow a friend's Dad's wood cutter to custom trim it as a direct replacement. Is wood my only choice or are there better alternative material?

underneath where its sagging, you could brace it like deezo said, Im sure that would help... or you could put a stock tire in place of the spare, I think they fit no problem, then the sagging wont be much of a problem would it?
Little known "How-to" courtesy of veteran member Wizeguy:
The stock one was getting crushed. Too much weight I guess.
Here's what I did.
Took a sheet of 1/4" plywood, laid the one from the trunk on to it for a template.
Marked the plywood and cut it out with a jig saw. Drilled out the location for the handle
and then jig sawed that at too.
My original idea was to directly replace the original but to do that you would need to
transfer the clips and foam pieces. Pita.
So what I did was flip the original upside down (foam pieces up) on top of the new piece.
I put wood glue between the pieces. Next I took (12)1/4" bevel headed screws and screwed
from the original cover side into the new plywood piece. Do this with all screws. Next put
weight on it overnight (so the glue can dry).
It now feels pretty solid and should stay in place as the original is still there.
Now to see how long this "Tire Cover Sandwich" lasts.

My suggestion >>
I say weld a steel plate to the outside of the sparetire well and gut the bottom of the car. Then, you can mount a full size spare to the bottom and use the screw lowering system the Pathfinders use.

I fixed mine a few months ago and didn't have to spend a dime. I took the panel out, sprayed it down with a garden hose on both sides, then layed face down in the garage, stacked heavy stuff on it and let it dry overnight.
The next morning it was dry and flat. I usually keep a small blanket in the trunk for various reasons, so I put it on top of the spare to fill the void. So far, no sagging and no squeaking.

And I may be mistaken about claiming all 15" Maxima rims since the 3rd gen SE models and 4th gen 15" WHEELS are 6.5" wide.......but I'm fairly sure you can't go more than 205 on the width of the tire......
I know the 3rd gen GXE wheels fit with not problem on 205 width tires....

we are speak of the wheel as it sits in the trunk.. what moron would place a wheel in the trunk while its standing upward.. to then it would be height as in diameter..
now we all know we are talking about the wheel as it sits in the trunk.. because that is the only logical way to transport a spare wheel.. so there for in this instance height is as i described it.. you are Albert Tang.. not Chris Tang.. your arguing skills are beneath me boy

Albertt's right; if you are talking about the height of the tire, it is implied you are talking about the overall diameter. If you are laying down and someone askes you how tall you are, do you say 6" (or in your case 4")? j/k
It's the same as the right side of the car is referenced from the driving position. If you are under the hood and indicate the right side, it is still understood as the passenger side.
