Looking to buy. Any opinions on 6th and 7th Gen. years?

I've had 2 Maxima's and have loved them. A 1997 SE 5 speed and a 2000 SE 5 speed (current). Looking to upgrade to either a 6th generation model or 7th generation model and curious about reliability issues, notable features, recommendations, years to avoid, inherent problems, etc. Spend 1.5 - 2 hours per day driving to work so looking for comfort, decent mpg, etc. Want to go with an auto tranny so please advise if any known problems here.

Very much appreciate ANY thoughts and opinions (be them god or bad). Thanks folks!!

6th gen are a POS, it's a jazzed up Altima. It has transmission woes, poorer build quality (first Maxima to be made in America) and eventually became CVT only (reliability woes)

7th gen have only CVT, might be a little torque steer happy & it has engine woes

Other cars to looks could include the Infiniti G35, Honda Accord, Mazda6, Altima 3.5 etc?

Thanks for the input. Yes, I've read mixed reviews on the CVT tranny and the other horror stories regarding build quality since the Nissan/Renault merger (2002?)

Anyone else have opinions on either of these gen's?

the 6th gen maxima was the last one to come with a automatic and manual transmission. From 2004-2006 it was automatic and in 2007 it became cvt, and the manual was from 2004-2006 or beyond.

The cvt in the 7th gen maxima has been very reliable if u look thru the 7th gen section you'll see there hasn't been many failures. As stated above the 6th gen was a pos, I had a 2004 and had premature transmission failure(automatic). I can't speak for the 2007-2008 with cvt. I currently have a 2010 and am very happy....added bonus, 2007-2010 maximas with the cvt have the added bonus of the extended warranty 10 yrs/120k miles. I think you'd be happy with the 7th gen, the cvt and vq work perfectly in harmony
