Just got back from the dealer, Jaguar that is

Dad bought an 02 X type 3 liter 5 speed automatic premium package at dealer invoice which is approx $ 36.5K; titanium exterior, charcoal interior. For those that don't know this is a new model Jag featuring AWD; the 3 liter puts out 233 HP; they have a sport package and offer a 5 speed manual. It's a sweet ride but not exactly what I woulda spent that amount of money on.

Man, that is a sweet car but it is a little pricey. He blew it though by getting the auto. He should have gotten the 5-speed manual.

That car looks great. My friend test drove it though and said the motor is sh** and for people 6' tall it's tough to be comfortable. he has high standards since he has a 00 328i. He too loved the looks but said it isn't any fun to drive.

I really wish someone could build something fun to drive like a BMW, because BMW prices are just robbery, and very little discount.

It's a Ford alright. It's the same platform as the Contour/Mystique/Cougar/Mondeo. It's the same Duratec engine as used in those (just a larger bore for the 3l vs 2.5l) and the same as the Taurus/Sable. The only real difference in the engine are the heads. Jag supplies the heads which have direct bucket followers, rather than pivoted ones that have hydraulic lash adjusters. The engine can rev higher, but will need its valves adjusted.
Tell you dad he should join the contour.org forum.

I hope that car kicks ****. Even my friend is hoping so too as with his 328i he had to draw a limit and so he did not get the Sport Package, only Luxury. If the Japanese can get the motor/chassis right, they are sure to offer it with all the toys at a reasonable price....

I hope his car doesn't have the delay problems I've encountered with my S-Type, though mine are related to the dealer ordering the wrong color. Tell him good luck with it!

Actually, I drive a Contour SVT, and that little sucker is FUN, and has given many a surpised people a run for their money, especially in the twisties here in Austin.

But, the chassis of the Jag is NOT the same as the old Contour/Mondeo. It is the same as the new Mondeo, which is larger than the old Contour and not even imported here as a car. It is also used in the Lincoln LS cars, which handle fairly well for their size. This chassis has won many awards in Europe, and they know how to drive.

But, yes, I am afraid that Jag(Ford) really messed up using such a cramped interior.

I hope your dad has good luck with the X-Type. I think it was Edmunds.com that did a test of it and said they weren't too happy with it. They said that the whole exhaust system fell out of the car while they were testing it!!

In the new Car & Driver it placed 5th out of 7 cars...not too impressive for a brand new model..

Thats not bad if $2000.00 is the total, not $2000.00 plus first month, last month, security, inceptions, etc...then its like $3500 out of pocket and thats way too much for that car.

Just for reference, on a 48 month lease (15K miles per year) on a 2K2 Maxima SE loaded up (sold for 800 over invoice - $28,039/
$30332 MSRP)without Nav, and with $3500 down, payments were 405.63. That's with a 47% residual after 4 years.
Sux.

And the Jaguar lease is: $1999 due at signing, $349 for 39 months - 10K miles per year - not including taxes, license, fees.
