Replacing Electric Struts?

I have an '87 Maxima with the electric struts. After 140,000 miles of Houston potholes, they are totalled. Places like Pep Boys tell me that new electrics will run $600... apiece! Conventional struts for a Maxima are less than $50 apiece.
What I need to know is can I install conventional struts in my Maxima? Do I need some sort of adapter for this, and where can I buy them? Or is there a conventional strut made to fit the electric mounts?
Thanks in advance,

Warning conventional struts suck.......
I replaced my electric ones for regular KYB GR2 struts. Now my handling is worse, they struts are too soft especially for the lowering springs. Also I read that some of the Z31 guys found a cheap fix for the struts. What you do is remove them and buy another O-ring for the gland and refill the strut with coolant. I threw away my old ones before learning of this.
