5 speed transmissions

I have an 86 max with a five speed that is whining terribly in 1st & 2nd, don't know if it will last much longer. Does anybody know if the 5 speeds are interchangeable over the different model years (i.e. - could I get a 5 spd from a 96 and would it bolt up without modifications?). If you don't know, any ideas on who could provide this information? Any / all help would be appreciated.

Thanks for the info. What was the cost to have the bearings replaced?

well my work was done for $500 ($250 parts and $250 labor), i also had the flywheel machined and the clutch replaced(extra $260) b/c it would need replaced soon anyways. I am not really sure what the going rate is, my work was done by a friend of the family.

The car only has 155000 miles. I bought it for my wife 2 years ago to use for running around town and it had 133000 miles then. I have an 86 Nissan hardbody with 292000 miles on it that I use as a daily commuter. That was one of the reason that I bought the Max. Plus, it's a really fun car to drive, a family car and a four door sports car.
