2 lanes into 1 - do you get in the lane that is about to end?

At a stoplight, it's great for instigating races, but you also block the people behind you from making their turn.
Not only that, but why can't you just get in the proper lane like the others? What makes you so special?
I'll admit, I've done it before...but no longer now that I'm old and my car is slow.

if you had a VQ engine you wouldn't have a merging problem

I always take the lane that is about to end, and I never have a merging problem.
