Ran even w/ a '98 VTEC 5spd accord in my 5spd!

Hey guys, I know a guy with a '98 LX VTEC 5 spd accord. Tonight we raced, and I cant hardly pull him up to 60mph. Finally, when I hit 3rd, I start pulling away. All he has is a cone filter. I have a ypipe and pop on my '95 5spd. He claims a best of 15.1 at the track, but isnt that unheard of on that car?? Is there something wrong with my car or is he fast? And I know its not just because of my launches b/c we did it from a 10mph roll and 40mph roll.

Yep, he's hiding something. NOS? I had a 98 Accord LX 5 speed and it ain't beating a Maxima. My stock auto Max would tear the crap outta my Accord(raced my wife a couple times. me in the Honda her in the Max). I had to push that car just to pass minivans.

I looked at the Accord vtec before I bought my Maxima and I can tell you that there's is no way that an Accord should ever be able stay with a Maxima, unless the the owner of the Maxima takes 2 of his spark plugs out.

Any 5 speed accord should get destroyed by a 5 speed max, especially one with intake and y pipe. There's something he's not telling you.

There is no possible way he could have kept up with you, a stock Maxima has way more power then his modded accord. Those only have but 155HP, he has something else in that car to have kept up with you until 60 not unless you didnt shift quick enough or took 2 of your plugs out. OOOOOh well is good that you did pull away from him at 60 thats 3rd gear,

Hey, this kid is a pretty honest guy. He really only does have an intake. And remember he said he pulled a 15.1(I dont know if we can believe that on a basically sotck accord?). His car is a 4 banger 5spd. Either those cars are faster than what we think or there is something wrong with my car. I have brand new tires on my car, and I still get a little wheelspin from a punch in first, so I THINK my car is running normal. It feels right. Got brand new plugs, and filter is cleaned, and just cleaned my tb. Engine only has 43k on it, car has 104k, long story on how I got a brand new engine. Could the cat be clogged after 100k on a car? Maybe thats slowing me down?

If he ran a 15.1, then he doesn't just have an intake. I don't care what the track conditions are, the 5 speed 4 banger will not do a 15.1 with just an intake.

my 95 auto with intake and catback lost to a stock 92 accord 5 speed by about a car length up to 80...and i had a major tuneup not much earlier. maybe we're all underestimating those damn accords???

It is absolutely not possible for a 5 speed accord with only intake to run a 15.1. I will go on record right now to say there is not a 5 speed 4 cyl accord in the WORLD with the 2.2L SOHC VTEC engine that has run a 15.1 with only an intake. The only thing I can think of is that possibly he bought a car with an H22A engine swap. That's the prelude engine VTEC 2.2L DOHC engine. 190-200 hp, depending on the year. And it's of course available with a 5 speed. If he unwittingly bought a car with that engine swap, then sure he could be even with you from 0-60.

The only other way he was even with you is if you are one of the worst drivers in the world. Lets hope thats not the case, but even if it is, he would not come close to running a 15.1 with that car. My friend had a 5 speed accord VTEC, and the best time he managed with intake, exhaust, VAFC and header was 16.1 @ 85 mph.

2000 Nissan Altima vs 2000-2001 Honda Accord 5spd. He beat me by like 1/2 a car length and we went up to 100. The *** had his stupid turn signal on to get infront of me during the race and I let go because of my girlfriend otherwise I don't think he would of managed to get infront of me. I can tell you this - The Maxima is much faster than a freaking Altima. Hope this answers some questions.

you should have pulled away from the start of the roll. there aren't many performance mods for the F23 so most likely he was spraying. he probably does run 15.1 in the 1320 but no way in hell its achieved with just an intake. this "pretty honest guy" doesnt seem honest to me!

Well, the truth will come out today. My friend has a '97 SE auto with intake. I will race him tonight. What would be the best way to race him to get an accurate idea of how much faster I am than him?? A roll? A punch from 40mph? If I cant beat my friend auto max, theres gotta be a problem with me.

If you want to determine how much power you are getting, race him from a roll, so that launching technique won't be a factor. Race him from any roll and that will indicate whether or not your car is putting down the power it should.

Even if you WERE a horrible friggen driver you should smoke a pretty much stock 5spd Accord. My friend has a 96 (vtech, 5spd) and by 100mph i am 3-4 cars on him. Not even a race. Your doing somthing wrong. You know you start in 1st, not 3rd, right

if you can't launch an AUTO then you shouldn't be racing!
hehehe, just being an *** I know there is some technique in launching the automagic

but seriously off the line power should be tested too....I think a good start is just as important as a good finish!

95 MaxRider you lost to a stock 92 5spd accord, wow those were like 10 sec to 60 in the 5spd version and nearly 11 with the auto.

15.7 on a really cold day at sea level! Maybe the guy's intake mod was really a turbo kit, since that's basically what a turbo setup is.
At low boost (5-6psi), a 15.1 ET is about what an F23A1/4 Accord would do. Just speculatin'.

Last summer, I raced my friends '01 V6 accord coupe w/ intake, and I tell you, I left him a LOT easier than I did this 5spd 4 banger. I think the 4cyl 5spd might actually be faster than the V6 auto.

Uh no. Go to a Honda site and the V6 accords spank the 5spd 4 bangers pretty easily. I think you got taken. He had waaaay more than an intake to run 15.1.

yeah from what I've seen the V6 Accord runs low 16's(~16.1-.3).....the auto trans really holds it back and the poor torque(200@4.7k??) screws the launch as well...nice car but not up to par IMO! so I wouldn't doubt a 5spd VQ or auto would put it in its place!

I just don't see a 4th gen Max losing to a 6th gen Accord. I own both cars, just purchased a 2k2 Silver Metallic Accord LX on thursday. I was saving for a 6spd max but my old beater (95 sentra) died and I didn't plan on replacing it this soon. I still have my 98 GXE so maybe it will get a few more mods later. The F23 VTEC has good pull for a 4 banger but its only 150hp, on the way home from the dealer my wife left me easily at every stoplight, i'm still breaking it in so I didn't really try an race her, i've only got 278 miles on it but even broken in with bolt-ons, the max should just pull away. My LX is not a fast car, but I didn't expect it to be, I needed a comfortable daily driver and I got it at $150 over invoice and its a 5-spd so I should average over 30 mpg on my commutes............

Unless his 5 speed 4 banger is an H22 Prelude swap. Those drop right into the Accords. In fact, Ive heard of them running low 14's with that swap and bolt ons.

Maybe thats his "VTEC 4 cylinder"?

I agree that a hybrid can run those times but the dude claimed he was stock motor with intake. I've driven the 4 banger accords and they are dogs.

Civic Thats Packin

I don't think underestimating any car is proper till you pop the hood. Saw this nasty a$$ kill a year and half ago in new brunkswick, nj. mid 90's civic modded up the a$$ no rear seat had like everything, one thing that stood out like a sore thumb was that his front body was longer than it would be stock, anyhoo, it was head to head with a 98 m3 white from ny, and raped him, i mean the civic raped him ryckers style. so my friend finally pulls up to him several lights later, and asked him what he had, i forget but he definitely did not have a honda engine in there. So lets not underestimate all of them.

Lataz.. Safe driving

They say "the motor is stock with an intake", which it is. But, it just never came stock in that car! (At least not in the USA).
