If it's the drop in...I heard there is no difference, just more noise. Maybe adds 1/2 hp. I was at first thinking of getting it but the thing costs around $40 and just makes more noise. For $80 I got a Pop Charger.
I just got the K&N Pop Charger and I think/heard that gives about 5-8 hp...probably closer to 5. It also makes a nice sound, when you accelerate people know you've got something under the hood. Also you don't have to replace it, just clean it, oil it and you're all set.
The CAI is probably the thing to get but I live in MA so I didn't want to risk it and just decided to stick with the Pop Charger...it's not as expensive too. Plus I didn't want to drill any holes in my car because I haven't paid off the loan yet.
I am not a car expert but this is just what the wise people on this BBS told me.

Turbo magazine put a drop in filter in their project max and claimed 4hp at the wheels. Who knows?

 

I have a 2000 Max SE 5pd and I have replaced the stock air filter with a K and N filter. I cant tell a difference, but Ive read that it adds about 3 HP to the car.............who knows . I cant tell a differance. The car is quick with or without the K and N filter!

I had a K&N drop-in filter put into my 98 Max. I have to say it didn't do anything for me. The ony thing I noticed is that when you're at a cruising speed on the highway, the rpm is slightly dropped.
