Most satisfying road kill in a while...ate a 330i

Today is a good day in Tampa. Temp this afternoon dropped to the hi 50's with plenty of sunshine around 3:50 p.m. when this kill happened.

On Fowler Ave. leaving the shop to get on I-275S when a blue 330i with new window stickers whips in front of me. The driver sicks his head out and waves. It's my buddy, Joe from Reeve's with a customer. We get to the onramp and he squeals tires, dust and debris flying up from all the consrtuction. I check traffic and then I to gun it. By the time we reach the end off the onramp, I'm gaining and we're rumbling past offset barricades and a curved concrete wall at over 85 mph (collecting many more road chips in my front-end than I already have).

On the freeway, on in his muffler until the opprtunity presents itself and I drop it to redline in 4th. I look in the mirror occasionally to see them switching lanes back and forth following me but constantly falling back.

Why was this so satisfying. He left first, I caught him, past him and he never gained. Also because I am assured that this kill is not due to driver error or inexperience. I know Joe's driving. I've bought 3 BMW's from him. He later calls about the experience. Tells me that the gentleman riding with him wanted to drive one of their pre-owned S4's. I guess he couldn't stand the thought of buying a $30+K German machine and getting 'dusted' by a NISSAN.

Another reason...I grew tired of leaving Civics, Accords, Integras, Celicas, 528's, Rustangs and things of sort. This has been my most gratifying kill in almost 4 months (a CL-S).

I've been getting dusted by Lighting, GS400's and my friend's M3 Turbo looking for better competition.

aaaww yeah

Was the 330i stick or auto? I've got the advantage I think, even stock, against all the other 3-series stick or auto. But not the 330i 5spd. I'm hungry to play with one of those

Most 3-series owners could care less about being dusted by a Maxima. 3'ers don't consider their cars to be family sedans. If they cared, then who in the world would buy a 325 or 525 that only has what, 175 hp? It's like buying a small house in a nice, affluent neighborhood as opposed to buying a big house in a lousy neighborhood. I'd take a 330i over a supercharged, 19'd 5th gen quad exhausted navi dvd Bilstein NOS Max any day of the year, including Feb. 29

Drive a BMW 3, E36 or E46 and you'll wonder why the h*** your steering and handling feels so s*****

I think the 330 5 speed would be a close race vs. a 5 speed 4th gen

They can hit 60 MpH in under 6 seconds.

I can kill an auto 325i but I think that's about it! Anything else and I'm roadkill. Damn auto ...

330 5spd's are definitley a good match for the 4th gen 5spd, i fooled around with a topaz blue one on the highway he had intake and exhaust , depending on when we started pulling on each other it was undecided because i won twice and he won twice??

That's what I'm thinking too.

I've been looking at the numbers and the Max actually has a better torque/weight ratio so we could probably get them in shorter races from a stop. But the 330i has a better horsepower/weight ratio so they'll probably take us on longer races, and from a roll on the highway.

They have the edge overall I think, but driver skill level would be a big factor too.

In the twisties they'll take us for sure if we have stock handling.

My $0.02

I think you're dead on, especially since most of those guys probably won't launch for max performance going against a "lowly" Maxima.

My friend has a 2001 auto 330i, I have a '97 SE auto. He takes me both off the line, from a roll, top end, you name it. Not enough to lose me in his rearview mirror or anything, but still a**kicking. I'm waiting to get done with my handling mods and then I'll do performance so I can be up with him and maybe beat him.

Honestly, a 330 5spd runs a 6 second flat 0-60. The new altima or the New Maxima will be a good match but stock for stock, a 330i 5spd will beat a stock 4th gen every time.

Man, I sat in 330ci which is a coupe version and damn, it had more leg room than my max. The dealer said coupe and sedan have the same wheelbase but coupe offers more legroom. Plus you can adjust the steering wheel in 4 different directions.

you won't.. because the center console on the 3 series is worse than the 5th Gen.. since you like to open your legs to air out your stuff

My mom has a 330i sport auto and would have to say that a stock 5-spd vs the auto 330 would be a pretty good race. I have seen 6.5 0-60 in some mags for auto but think its more like 6.8. If i were a betting man i would have to go with the 330i in a race 0-100 vs a stock 5spd. Also the odds of you taking a 330i 5spd in a stock max are very slim.

the man with the factory freak is calling odds?

i say with Neal running 14.8 stock and Veetec running 14.7 stock.. its not hard for a stock max to walk a 330i.. most of them run 15.3

www.car-stats.com DB says 14.9, 14.8 (330i), and 14.7 (330Ci)

...and then 14.4 for a clutch dropped ( ) 330xi

Not all stock 5 spd maxs run in the 14s when thier stock, Neal is a hell of a driver Vtec must be too. Im saying this based on my car beating stock 5-spds and i'm almost positive it wont take the 330i from a stop to 100. Also on bimmer.org I have seen time slips for 330i steptronics running very low 15s a few times. Im not trying to start an argument here i was just stating where my $ would be .

You love ******* my lovely ambers.

With some mods, I'm sure a 330 would do nicely. I have loved every Bimmer I've ever owned (none were left stock).

The main thing I love about this modded Max is that I and 4 of my kids can 'roll out' on many so-called sports cars in my family sedan and never have to worry about reliability. I love to see that surprised look!!!

People expect an MKIV Supra to be fast and run away from Ferrari's, C5's, Porsche's and run Vipers, but not too many people I've met expect a Max to do what it is capable of.

My brother owns a 330ci, 5-speed, and that thing is freakin' fast. He can (almost) stay with my other brother in his 1999 Cobra 5-speed.. Both will dust me... (2000 SE 5-speed)..

BTW, I've never sat in a car like the 330 with that much leg room.. Every car I've ever owned the seat is all the way back (including the Max) and I can barely touch the pedals in his if I do that...

If I had $15K more to spend on a car, I'd be driving one right now too!! Guess I'll just have to console myself with MODS...

I kinda missed Tampa. I worked there from May until Sept 23, shortly after the incident. Missed the warmth, nice beaches, and crazy drivers . I worked for CP Ships, lived in Rocky Point, and drove all kinds of rental cars. Loved the drive to Clearwater, St. Pete, and the who line of beaches. Yeah, this is getting off topic... yuk yuk

As it should. The power #s, RWD are an advantage already.
The 330xi has done 0-60mph in 5.7 seconds.

I'd take a 330 over a new Maxima any day as well.

I like the house analogy, but here's another: why buy a Ferrari that does 4.0 to 60mph when you can buy a Z06 and do the same at less than 1/2 the cost?

Of course, mag stats don't glamorize the Maxima. Besides, do track stats reflect the car's #s as stock?

That's the best part.

Nothing like the disappointment a guy in his 323i gets when a lowly 3rd gen Max is keeping right up.
