Warning about s/c power and LSDs
Warning about s/c power and LSDs
For those who missed this before, a caveat using an LSD with mad power (like an s/c with NOS). A local shop put a Quaife in a VW they'd already s/c'd for the guy. He was showing off to his friends how he could leave double stripes on the pavement and he snapped his crankshaft in half. That's 1-1/2" of pure hardened steel, and one expensive repair! There's always a weak link to break. Heck, I snapped a driveshaft on my normally aspirated Maxima with the old open differential! Needless to say, it trashed the differential too.

About high power and high traction, yup, once you start strengthening certain things, other things will become the weak link. I'd say my transmission is pretty strong right now, as I cryogenically tempered the gears on the inside, and I have a Quaife. I sure hope my crankshaft doesnt break.
I think he must have had a flaw already in the crank for it to break like that. My Son has a VR6 with a Quaife and Slicks, he dumps the clutch at 4k at every launch and he ran low 13's all last year with no problems. This year he has installed direct port etc and should be in mid 12's so we hope it holds together.
Maxima engines are built relatively strong, and i think the crank could hold up to 350 hp without serious problems. I think CV joints and output shafts would twist up like a straw before the crank snaps. Some motors do have flawed parts though, blocks, cranks, rods, any imperfections and something under that kind of stress has got to give eventually.
I guess I'll find out later this year. I'm getting axles rebuilt/cryo treated, will have a prototype LSD, and hopefully the tranny will be fully rebuilt. I guess I'll find out what's weak then. But the Maxima looks like it has pretty good sized axles, so I don't think they'd go that easily.

Wouldnt it be the clutch? Hmmmmm a reason to like my Cenerforce DF, it slips! HAHAHAHAHAHA
I'm heading to the track this Wednesday. I'll be trying out some drag radials for the first time along with the juicy bost, soooooo wish me luck!

Its all in the design of the bottom end. Nissan tends to over engineer in that department so you shouldnt see any problems past 500 crank hp IMO. Of course im totally guessing but hey, Hondas cranks last up to 800 hp, you dont think a Nissan V6 will?

Rods and pistons, uhhhhhhhh no.

send gears and shafts to cryo treatment place. they cryo treat parts and send them back to tranny shop. rebuild tranny. enjoy.
to understand what cryo treating is, do a search on it. you'll find a lot better description that way than one of us trying to describe it.
