98 Mustang GT vs little ole me

Let me first say I never post kills or defeats but I think this is worth mentioning. Perhaps the gentleman in the car did not know how to shift or maybe the VQ with mods is a awesome combination. I am coasting along and I see a red GT changing lanes, I was trying to get closer because I like the sound of the GT. After about three miles I get in the other lane (this is a two lane) we are about 500 yards from green light I am sure we all have been here and saying "Please turn red, Please turn red" and yes she turned red. We get to the light and I rev him and he returns the rev so "once again it's on" I have raced a GT before and it was not pretty so I expected the samething this time however....

We take off I launch around 3K and its on! I notice something strange it was as though both cars were parked bacause we were neck and neck all the way to 90 something. Honestly around 80 I started to let off and them jumped back on it. From previous post I thought the 98+ Mustangs were the faster ones, I will after this post. We get to the next light I let the window down.

Me: Hey nice run, what year is you Mustang
Him: What kind of car is that, mine is a 98
Me: Just a plain ole Maxima
Him: That thang sure is fast!!
Me: Thanks

I ran a GT about a month ago and it was not pretty this was probably a 2K.

I have Y, JWT (no intake resonator) thanks DaveB....today was a good day

Nice run

Pre-99 Mustang GT's are weak. 215 HP from a 4.6L V8

The one you raced before was probably the 99+ with 260 HP.

Pardon my ignorance, but why is a 97 maxima the fastest apart from the 2k2? I heard a similar statement made about the Z28 (97).

OBD2 was mandated in 96 but what is it about a particular year that makes a car better built if its the same generation. Please forgive me for this but I am curious about this. Thanks for the response, hows the max?

OBD2 is on all 4th gen's. And 95 is "said" to be the quickest 4th gen.

That would actually seem a little more believeable because:

1) The 95-96's were a hair (30 lb or so) lighter
2) They were OBD1

But Sprint says 97.

Maybe he's just pulling our chains

Maybe he is saying '97 because the fastest NA Maximas seem to be '97's (theblue & VQDriver just to name a few)?. However, I know of at least two 1995 Automatic GXE's that have ran 15.2XX with an intake only.

I'm not sure about VQDriver, but I know theblue is an exceptional driver. He may have a 97, but that might not have anything to do with it.

OBD1 cars (pre 96) are known to respond much better to mods than OBD2 cars (96+) so I could believe that a 95 Maxima would respond better to mods like intakes than a 96+

Yes I agree with you 100%. The driver is the most determining factor in achieving a good E.T. Aaron may be able to run 14.2 in his car, while someone else driving it may run a 14.8. VQDriver ran a 14.32 @95.61mph, as per his sig, which is still one of the best NA times.

a guy my cousin dates drive a 98 mustang gt with an exhaust and he wants to race me... im completely stock, so i know ill lose, but im wondering how badly? can i earn some respect from him, cuz hes one of those typical "domestics rule the road" kind of people. he claims hes beat "plenty" of vettes, 300ZX TT's and so on...

I pitty the foo who guts his ride! But seriously, Ben ran a 15.277 @ 89.11 MPH in his 1995 auto (intake only), while I ran a 15.267 @ 91.217 MPH in my 1995 auto (intake only). I have yet to see a auto 96+ run better than that, which says something about the '95s.

Your best bet is to race from a roll, although I have no idea what kind of gains Mustangs get from an exhaust. If you race from a stop and he has any sort of skill whatsoever he will own you with all of the torque.

BTW, if he's beaten "plenty" of vette's and 300ZX TT's then why the heck would he want to pick on a "lowly" Maxima??

who knows y he wants to race me... prolly cuz he doesnt think maximas are as fast as they are... when i told him some were capable of running high 14's stock, he said, in the 1/8th? and im like, no, in the 1/4... then hes like, oh well thats with N-O-S though huh... i hope i can at least earn a lil respect with the max.

Race from a roll. You might not beat him, but he probably won't get very far.

The first week I had my Max I ran into a 96-98 GT and I was right behind him on a local highway. We got clear of some traffic and he hammered it. I hit it about a second later. From 50-90 he didn't pull on me at all...other than the 1 or 2 car lengths he pulled because he hit it first. I'm stock and he sounded stock too.

If he has an exhaust he'll probably beat you for sure. But get yourself a Y-pipe and an intake first to make it even. That should be fun!

2000+ Maximas have 32 more HP, but they are also slightly heavier, which offsets their increased power somewhat.. So I think 5th gen vs 4gen should be a close race (not including the 2k2's of course)

Haha yeah right. This guy must have been racing Vette's and 300ZX TT's that were stopped on the side of the road. I guess if this guy can beat those cars then I should have no problem with beating a 2002 Z28 SS.
