Will a 5th gen trans fit in a 4th gen perfectly?

If so what would be the benifits of doing this kind of swap, I have bearing problems and I am going to replace the whole tranny so I figure if the 5th gen is better and it fits, more than likely it will be the same price

thanks in advance for the info

I'm no expert so this is more opinion than gospel but I read that the 5th gen trans has beefier internals but is otherwise just a massaged version of the old trans. Any year to year swap is bound to have a few snags but this should be very doable by any professional shop. My big Q is this six speed business. I'm sure I'm not the first to wonder about if they will fit earlier 5th gen or even 4th gen cars. With a Quaiffe listing at $1445 alone it would be well worth it to wait around for a wrecked 2K2 and fork over the dough to get the trans!!

Your right about the 5th gen tranny being beefier than the 4th gens, but the thing with the 6 speed is;

1) it's not very efficient, less efficient than the 5 speed.
2)Apparently less durable, too.

Point 2 may simply be because it has to deal with the VQ35's bigger torque than the VQ30's torque.

I'll wait and see how this 6 speed evolves. I bet the soon to be released 6 speed CL-S will be in the same boat.

If I'm not mistaken, the 6 speed transmission is cable shifted and not rod like the 4th and 5th gen 5 speeds. That could be a major snag.
