Transmission acting weird... :(

While in 3rd gear, when I get to just above 3k rpms, the rpms drop 1-2 hundred rpms and it keeps accelerating... It's really weird and only does it in 3rd. Its a brand new tranny with about 4k on it... Maybe something to do with the torque converter?

It's shifting into 4th perhaps? Then after it's in 4th, the torque converter will lock up as well. So there are 4 changes you feel altogether.

1st to 2nd
2nd to 3rd
3rd to 4th
Torque converter lock

No, it's not shifting into 4th. This is with OD off. Lets say the cars at mid throttle in 3rd gear... at about 3200rpms the rpms drop back down to 3000. Its really weird and only happens in 3rd gear...

But the TC shouldn't lock in 3rd gear...

Someone mentioned something about the MAF sensor in another thread yesterday..... Same sort of problem I think. RPM's going a bit strange from time to time.

That's the torque converter locking. Most automatics will lockup in 3rd and 4th. Some even lockup in 2nd.

So if it happens when I'm accelerating, then somethings wrong right? I still have about 6000 miles of warranty left on this tranny, so I'll just go get another one if thats the case

i know i know

A while back some people posted that when you are racing or accelerating with the O/D off and when you get to about 4-5k press the O/D back on then the rpm's shoot up and you get a "surge" of power. What is really happening is the torque converter is unlocking and that is why the rpm's launch up. I believe it is something to do with the tranny not liking to shift gears when the torque converter is locked up so it is easier on itself. But when O/D is off the tranny locks up thinking it is not going to have to change. Personally I would like the torque converter to lock up in first so that it is as close to a manuals tranfer of power, being that in an auto it is fluid, not a clutch that transfers power.
