Is modifying a car a stage?

Lately ive spent so much money on my car its getting ridiculous, all my pay checks go into my car, I paid off the credit card and now debt free and have a beautiful head turning car. But why can’t I stop ?? My parents looked at my car and said im stupid for putting that much money into a car and not saving a penny. Me putting all that stuff in doesn’t make the car value go up. What is wrong with me seriously is this some adolescent stage? Do I need to be slap in the back of the head? Or am I normal and starting to realize the value of a dollar. I know this might sound stupid but this is the crap that spinning through my head. im thinking o I should have saved my money regretting modifying my car, then another side of my head says time for tv in the dash with ps2 and vb with a nice shot of nos. wtf has any1 been thru this b4 ?? o yea please no flames just tryin to post my thoughts not tryin to insult ne1. but wht is yur guys thoughts about this

a stage... not really
you do what you like, and the older your get the more bills your probably going to have to pay so modding is usually not done to the stage you do it now. in the long run modding your car has no value except to you. (its like burning $$$ because you like to watch the flames) as you progress through life you will buy cars that are pretty nice & fast right from the factory and you might mod it somewhat but your going to have to drive it to work, out with family and friends Etc. and can you imagine driving with co-worker/family in the car trying to talking over the sound of the car when your 50+
it comes down to do you have money to throw away...

Welcome to the club. I'd say, if anything, it's a hobby. Perhaps curbing your spending is wise, but giving it up totally, that's no fun. If you're worried about money that much, talk with someone who knows a lot about it, as in, deals with it daily. I think there's a fund which can only have money which you actually earned put into it. I know it's not a lot of help, but just ask questions. Also, divide your spending. 100 percent going into one thing prob isn't the best of ideas. Have a portion which is saved/invested, a part which is spent right now, part that is spent in a few weeks, and part that is spent in a few months. All things in moderation, that's the best advice.

What it comes down to is no one lives forever, so enjoy it now. If modding your car is what you like doing, then keep doing it. When you start having kids, you won't be able to do it as much as you become cash strapped. I do agree that you should divide your money and maybe set only a percentage towards your car (10-15% ??) and save/invest the rest. When your car fund reaches the set amount that you need for whatever mod is coming up next, then you go ahead and buy it.

Re: Is modifying a car a stage?

Sometimes you get lucky and get to do it for a living... My car is technically a business expense (to a point) and I get to do this every day. But I wouldn't say it's a stage, I know people in their late 30's, 40's still doing this.

Theres a guy that I work with that is 57 and is in a Corvette club and still loves to mod his cars and work on others cars. So its not just a stage, its just what you like to do. I know exactly what you feel about spending money on it though, I have poured a ton of money into my car and its not even half as nice as a lot of the peoples on here, ie sx7r,shadow,sprintmax,pawn, just to mention a few there are a ton more that I think are great. But I enjoy driving it and enjoy making it nice so I guess I can justify it to a point.lol Just do what makes you happy. Take Care

well, i dont believe in modding a car spending more than what the car itself is worth. I mean throw in a bunch of things here and there to spice it up a litle bit but thats about it. If i want a head spinning fast car ill buy one. My car right now is stock except for audio and the only "mods" i plan to do are 97/99 wheels, tint, clear corners (which im ordering today finally), and maybe an intake and/or y pipe later on.

This is the same thing I go through everyday. Everyday I say I'm going to stop for a while, but then an idea pops into my head and I can't help but to tackle a new project. My girlfriend said it was cute at first, but now its an obsession. I think she's just getting jealous. My friends, who aren't into cars doesn't understand why I would for go a night at the club or a shopping trip, just to work on my car. They don't understand why I would pass up the newest shoe on the market so that I can get a y-pipe. However, my friends and my girl love my car, just not like I do. I wonder if there are any support groups out there? Will that even work? Or will we be sitting around talking about cars all day?

It's a sickness! I couldn't just be satisfied modding my past 7 cars...I had to start on MomzMax too! I think they are developing some kind of cure in Sweden or something...

oh boy...

I know my wife will never read this. Even if she does... "who's FrankBattle??"

I have a 3rd gen (90se). It's a second car and had been sitting around the yard for 6 months or so. So, in the dead of winter, for some reason (finding maxima.org is a big one), I decided to "fix it up" and make it my play car.

Mind you it already had a very nice stereo in it.

It started with 17" Enkei rims (and of course, tires: kumho). Then I read somewhere that people can actually buy aftermarket struts and springs . So I got the tokico/eibach combo. Then I heard about FSTBs. And CAIs. So, of course I NEEDED those too.

And while I'm at it, my sunroof has a hairline crack in it. Luckily a guy on the org was parting out his max...$50 for a sunrook assembly!! And oh yeah, my front door panels needed replacement. Same guy sold me those too..

And OF COURSE now that the car is getting all this attention, I need a "different" sound system. So, yeah I had to get the Pioneer CD/MP3 player, new 6.5" component speakers for the front, all MTX amps, sound dampening, stinger accessories.

...what's more? I'm not done!!!! Now I will get the windows tinted once I'm done with all this other stuff. *sigh*

So, no, it's not a stage. I'm in my 30s and have BIG (B I G) bills. Modding your maxima (or any car) is damn near an addiction!!! But more like an expensive hobby. When you guys find the 12 step program to get off this bandwagon, er, don't call me. This feels good.

I'll never race; I just want the car to look good. I think I'm smitten, addicted, maximapoosywhipped.

Once it's in your blood, forget about it. Just hope you marry a woman that understands. Turns out the 'stage' lasts until you have kids. Then you settle down a bit. Once the kids get older, around 10 or so, You feel you owe it to yourself to spend time the way you want to. So you begin modding cars again. It's not even a mid life crisis yet. It's just the beginning.

I was roughly introduced to "modding" when i started going to the southeast meet's.By itself the max look's good but when parked among other's you notice the huge wheel gap and other small flaw's.

So it began first came the tint followed by the CAT,B-pipe then y-pipe then CAI then spring's then diamond clear's then.........i tell you folk's maxima.org is not good for your finance's.

I know the guys with 18's won't like this but I think the Max rides like a Stage with them on.
