Fire Extinguisher

Why do people have them inside their car mounted near the window?

Re: Fire Extinguisher

it has some safety purposes, but its 99.9% a Ricer fad. I think those particular extinguishers are only good for small electrical fires anyways!

Hmm... I wouldn't put it in any window. It's a potential projectile if you crash. I'd put it near the floor somewhere or in the trunk (even though it's less accessable).

I used to keep one in my '71 240Z, near the floor. It might only be good for small electrical fires, but the only time I've ever needed a fire extinquisher it sure saved my car! Oh, my house too, since it was starting to catch on fire in the garage ...

a Fire extinguisher can be pretty useful like just in case you have a burning pillow stuck under your car.

Re: Get one!

true but I suggest a REAL mini-extinguisher from Walmart or HOme depot because I've heard the APC ones are good only for small electrical fires(ie-amps,etc.)

Trunk

I've got mine in the trunk, cost me under $15 from Meijer, came with a holder w/ tape - I lifted the carpet at the left corner of the trunk and placed it there. Carpet goes over it. Clean. You can still tell it's there, but that seemed like the best place to put it at the time.

Even better, let's pay $200 for a chrome one! I just don't get that one.
Anyway, I have not found a good place to mount mine, so it just lays in the trunk wedged by other stuff so it doesn't roll too bad.

yeah i heard a story about some guy got into a fairly high speed accident. he would have survived except that his kleen-x box that he had on his rear deck got propelled forward after impact and hit him in the back of the head and killed him.

Is this for real or are you just raggin' on me? A Kleenex box???

When buying an extinguisher, just make sure it has SOME "ABC" type ability. Most of the really tiny ones (like the OBX chrome ones) have only a "BC" type fire rating, and when I picked the thing up I instantly thought this toy has got to be too small! I bought a slightly bigger ABC fire extinguisher but still have to mount it somehow (came with a bracket).

That's a pretty good price for Halon fire extinguisher. I heard with other type of fire extinguisher, it will ruin whatever it sprayed on. With Halon, you can still can clean it up nicely.

APC/ OBX one sux. Looses pressure too easily.

Different type of fire extinguisher

Halon type seems to be the best choice for cars.

I put out an oven fire with dry chemical type before. That stuff is nasty, took forever to clean up.

Another good site. Bottom line. Dry chemical type will destory your car, might as well let it burn to the ground. GET HALON.

I hope they still have them at Homedepot The cheapest halon fire extinguisher I seen so far range from $80 to $140.

if you want the flashy APC chrome/polished unit, you can always have it emptied and refilled by a local place that specializes in recharging/checking fire extinguishers.
