What happens when you put too much oil in your engine?

Just curious. What are the possible ramifications of putting in more oil than you are supposed to? Our cars (4th gen. anyway) call for 4.25 qts. Well, what happens if you put in 5.25? 6.25? 7.25?... Thanks guys.

I would not be surprised if the result of too much oil is similar to the result of injesting water through the throttle body: hydraulic lock. Sound right?

your engine's performance would be bogged down a bit depending upon how much extra oil was in there. Putting in more than speculated will take more time for the oil to circulate properly. Just check the dip stick now and then after adding/changing oil easily avoidable.

VERY BAD

It will cause the oil to churn and mix a lot of air up in it, resulting in poor lubrication, and engine wear. Almost worse than not enough oil.

Too much oil will create a foaming effect and it will also tend to blow out places it shouldn't. My mother overfilled her Subaru once by like 1 quart and during driving it ****ed out the fill tube.
